That will happen with too much initial timing. The engine kicks back and breaks the nose of the starter.

Thought of that but the timing has been the same for several years?
[There was plenty of room to remove/install intake and not even touch the dis...]

Timing has been the same? What does that mean? When was the last time you checked it? If it cranks hard when hot, it can kick back and break the nose just like that.

I just mean it would of done it long ago no, if it was timing? Its not a hot start issue. was cold the other night and felt like it just stopped cranking, not low on juice. Then a quick on off and it spun again. I got 4 starts out of it since then, 5th time to get up on ramps was a no go.

been a while since checked it bu that snot something that changes on it own, right?

Actually, it could have cracked a long time ago, and you just finished it off the other night. Who knows. I would look at the timing anyway, takes 5 minutes tops. The only thing I have seen crack the nose like that is engine kick back. I suppose it could also be caused by the wrong firing order, like misplaced plug wires, but timing is what first comes to mind when I see that.

Just odd how these small problems are poppin up.[/FONT] [ I labeled all the wires before I did the new lifters. and always change them one at a time, did just put on new Accel 8mm spiral core wire the other day http://bit.ly/1vLv1ps only $34 shipped ]

Do you have allergies? Mine have been active allot lately. Takes nasal spray to breath through my nose, messes with smells sometimes.

I think I smell something sweet. There is no water in the oil and no oil in the water, but the water lvl has dropped.
It did sit several days before that first incidence.

lets do some DC detective work & just skip to reusing the intake gasket was a fail, but a small fail at this point.

anything I should use on the new intake gasket coming to assure sealing?

Ragweed is bad this year. I don't suffer from it, just mild hay fever in the Spring is all.

I use silicone around the water passages top and bottom of the gasket. I put some on my finger and smear a thin coat around the opening. I also spray a thin coat of copper coat or spray tack on both sides of the gasket around the intake ports.

Got it torn down, was the back pass head water port that isnt used [ TA intake is solid there ] it was the only one without a nice rig of RTV still around it.

But more fun, I need a brake booster & dont have another $100 to toss at it. Its works fine one time you stop, next it goes woosh & the pedal gets hard, then it works again.

New starter & redoing intake killed my fun money. [ just a little extra dab of RTV could of avoided it, but ya hate to use to much of that stuff ]

How pacific is a booster to a car?

no idea on the 79 .. but earlier on the big car vs. A-body were definitely different. Did you make sure that the check-valve is good ? those only cost a couple bux off the HELP display at any auto parts store

Put a vacuum gauge on engine. Just to make sure you produce enough vaccum. Check valve can be bad here too.
