Its a 71 skylark with the 8.5 rear. It has 2.73 gears in now and I am installing 3.42. Do I need a different carrier?

Thanks for the info. Im thinking about installing a full spool. Will the spool have the correct offset or will I still need a spacer?

NO you do not . 2.73 -5.57 is on the 3 series carrier

    2.41 -2.56 is the 2 series carrier

PLEASE disreguard the info you just received.

10 bolt 8.5 has a different carrier break than 12 bolt chevy and 8.2 chevy

10 bolt 7.5 AGAIN is not the normal carrier break either. it is as follows
2.14-3.08 2 series carrier and 3.23-4.56 is the 3 series carrier.

Just install your 3.42 directly onto your 2.73 carrier and you will be good to go.

    Take care, Jim

Full spool is for RACING... You will need aftermarket axles too If your car is 50 / 50 still go posi NOT SPOOL.

The spool only comes in 3 series which is any ratio from 2.73 -5.57 and all in between.

Crap as always Jim is correct about the 2.73 being a 3 series posi. I keep forgetting that the 12 bolt is different than the 8.5 sorry
