Summary The Rick Mears, Shinoda/Williams-bodied Marlboro with a 350cid/375hp V8 ZR1. Boyd Coddington wheels built by Penske Racing for the Marlboro Racing Team. Only 556 original miles.
Description One of one all original ZR1 Rick Mears addition featured in "Vette" magazine in September 1991. A Special Edition ZR1 built by Penske Racing with a 350cid/375hp V8. Indy 500 Marboro Racing Teams "Hot Licks Red" is the exterior paint color. This 556 original mile car with all original documents was autographed by Rick Mears. I'd driven open-wheel racecars before, but compared with Rick's weekend car, they were about 650hp down, capable of only 1/3 the lateral acceleration and worth roughly the cost of a PC91 half shaft. The 3-time Indianapolis 500 winner and 3-time CART Champion "Ovalmeister" then showed me a new concoction: his Mears/Shinoda-Williams/Marlboro ZR1. Rick and Larry Shinoda got together with Rick's Marlboro sponsor and built a Special Edition ZR1. The result is a red and white Shinoda-bodied ZR1 with wheels by Boyd Coddington. The Shinoda-Williams Corvette body kit is both attractive and aggressive, yet not garish. Shinoda capitalized on existing Corvette styling cues rather than tacking on unsuitable addenda. Of course, you would expect this from the man who helped design the 1963 Sting Ray. Mechanically, little has been changed from stock on the Chevy super car. When you speak about Rick Mears, you can't exclude the name of Roger Penske. In 1977, Mario Andretti split his time between Indy cars, driving for Penske, and Formula 1, driving for Lotus. Penske recognized an extremely talented 25-year-old driver in Mears and gave him the seat while Mario was away. This seat became permanent in '78. Rick and Roger have been together ever since, having written the longest chapter in the book on team manager/driver relationships. Colin Chapman and Jim Clark, Roger Penske and Mark Donohue, Ken Tyrell and Jackie Stewart, Richard Childress and Dale Earnhardt, Ron Dennis and Ayrton Senna, Penske and Mears-all have been astoundingly successful relationships, but none has lasted longer than Roger and Rick's. Mears also won the Indy Car Championship that year, as he did in '81 and '82. Indy came his way in '84, too. Mears took the pole and won his third Indy in '88, which was, to him, his most triumphant moment, having "returned" after nearly losing both feet marking close friend Penske's 25th year in racing. It was also the first Indy won by the Illmor-Chevrolet V8. In 1991, Rick has finished third, fourth, and fifth in CART's first three races. He also took the pole at Indy after crashing for the first time at the Brickyard during practice, breaking another bone in his right foot. Rick then won his fourth Indy, being only the third man ever to do so. Rick took delivery of one of the first ZR1's when they were initially introduced.
