1981 buick regal help......

  1. Hello all!! I am here with a question. I have an '81 buick regal, with a 231 V-6....I have been having trouble with something in the engine, carb., somewhere, just can't figure out where. First thing in the morning, it starts very hard. You have to pump the gas for a while before it will start, and then it takes a few minutes before it will actually stay started. IF YOU DON'T DO THIS, it will NOT RUN properly at all. It acts like it isn't getting enough gas when driving down the road. It bogs down, and wants to stall. When pulling around a corner, or stop sign, or light, it wants to stall, even if it is warmed up for 20 minutes in the a.m.....We have replaced all items on carb., coil, dist., and pretty much everything else too. We are lost. We haven't replaced the fuel pump, becuz we were thinking that it would not act better after it reaches about 40 mph. It is also missing quite a bit, and we put the little machine on it, and it said the oxygen sensor was out, so we just replaced that. This engine has 106,000 miles on it.....and it is the 3rd replacement motor. The other 2 motors had 80,000 and 55,000. Does anyone have any ideas? We don't really know what else to check. The check engine light was going off and on, but pretty much stays on now. The oil/choke light flickers off and on, like a short in the wire. Any idea's would be great. Thanks, Shelley

    Same prob?

Yeah I just took out my cars fuel filter, after I changed all the stuff you said, coil, cap, rotor, ect., and now my car is all most back to normal, but who knows how long it was in there before! Plus if you car doesn't have enough water it will not warm up properly, and there for giving it a constant rough idle. Hope I helped

  4. Already changed the fuel filter, twice....Is there 2 filters on this car? THanks, Shelley

    ECM?

You replaced all the hard parts. sounds like the ECM has water or rusting inside it.
should be a simple fix.go and find a junk yard ande pull a used one and plug it into yours.
make sure it's same model car and year as you's.
ask the guys at regals with extra cyclinders if they have one kicking around.

  6. Hello all....I am back. I forgot to mention that when I first start the car, there is also a"rattling" noise. It lasts for about 10 seconds, then seems to quit, but when I stop at a stop sign, or am at a light, the rattling comes back. Could this be a main berring (sp?) going out? That is what someone mentioned to me today.....Would it give the same symptoms that I described earlier? (also, not sure if I mentioned this, but the oil/choke light flickers, and the check engine light is on constantly now) Thanks:confused:

What oil filter are you using? I have read somewhere the Fram filters have a poor anti drainback valve in them and can cause valvetrain noise at startup.

  8. Thanks, I think we have a fram oil filter on it....Will have to try a different kind this week when we change the oil and see if that helps. We have never had any trouble with fram before, and have used it alot..(we have 5 vehicles). Thanks again, Shelley
