Hellwig 5803 should fit but does anyone know why aftermarket control arms have holes in the side but bar appears to mount on the underside of arm?

The factory 73 control arms all had the holes drilled in the sides and the sway bar bracket was bolted in between them then the sway bar bolted on from the bottom. I suspect they changed it because the new design did not require shims.

I have Hotchkis 1306 lower arms that have holes in the bottom edge but when you look on the Hotchkis site or Summit Racing, all the aftermarket arms have mounting holes in the side, I am confused!

I don't think you have the right images. This is what I find on the web. It looks like it mounts on the bottom and comes with the OEM style mounts that go inside the control arm to complete the boxing for the mounts. If your Hotchkis arms have threaded holes in the bottom, you won't need to the U-brackets, just bolt this to the bottom. Also, about any bone yard that still has 73-77 Monte Carlos or Grand Prixs should have one you can pull cheap and easy.

I have these boxed arms http://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/hss-1306/overview/ why do these have holes in the side? and mine are in the bottom! The sway bar you show looks like it would fit mine but it wouldn't fit the arms pictured in my link. Does rear sway bar improve et (traction) there is a weight penalty to bear in mind. Is it a worthwhile upgrade for a car which does corner carving and some 1/4 mile action?

I believe those are just stock pictures, not actual pictures of your particular arm. I believe the bar you reference will bolt to your arms.

As for the effectiveness, if you are more of a racer than a daily driver/part time corner carver, I'd go with something like an HR bar. Otherwise, this one is fine as a low cost alternative that will give you a better handling experience without harming the ride.
