Hello everyone, I have a 1973 Buick Riviera Stage-1, it had a 3.23 posi, until someone felt they needed it more than I did, and stole my rear diff while car was in storage. I'm having trouble finding replacement parts locally, I guess the thief had the same problem. My question is, other than 71-71 Rivieras, what other cars/years had these big 9 3/8" rears with posi? thank you.
Wow, not a good item to have stolen. I believe the 71-72 Rivs and Electra did not get the 3.23. It was 2.93 standard or 3.42 posi for the GS. According to the 71 manual the Electra only got the 2.73. I don't have a 72 manual but suspect it may be same as 71. Possible available special order but that's a needle in hay stack. Finding a 3.23 9-3/8 posi will be very difficult unless you find a junk Stage 1 Riv. Finding a 3.42 posi from a 71/72 Riv GS will be easier. You may know the 73 GS Riv did not come standard with the 3.23 posi. Only Stage 1 optioned cars had it standard
I believe that 71-72 Pontiac Grand Ville's came with 3.08 gears standard. not exactly 3.23's, but closer than a 2 series gearset. My Pontiac has 3.08's and it moves just fine. The optional set was 3.23's, but good luck finding one.
I'm not sure if it was a 3.23.or 3.42 then i now it was at least near 3.23 or more turns of driveshaft per rotation of tire. thanks guys
The Grandville rears seems to be a wild goose chase because all info come up with either 8-1/2" or 8-7/8" ring gear size no 9-3/8".
