Does anyone know if there were two (2) different
types of rear bumpers for the 1972 Skylark's.....
one with holes around the tail lights for a rubber rub strips.
and one without holes. I have a rear bumper without the
holes, and NO rubber rub strips, but it has the center
BUICK nameplate like all the other 1972's.??????
Go figure  Thanks for any info......ADS

I'm not aware of this. GM discountinued the 72 bumper before the 71 and sold the 71 as a replacement for the 72. I think you have a 71 bumper that was drilled for the bumper plate. I'm pretty sure all 72 Skylarks came new with the impact strips front and rear. The front impact 3 part strip is available reproduction and the rear is not at this time to the best of my knowledge. I bought a n.o.s. rear set a couple years ago ($$$$) and have not found a set since. If I find a source I will post it. :beer AL.

    Now I know.......

IDOXLR8 Thanks for the info....I think you hit the nail
right on the head. When I was in the Service my brother-in-law
was in an accident with the car, and they must have put a 1971
bumper on the car in place of a 1972 bumper with the holes
drilled for the center (Buick Name Plate)......because the 72
bumpers were discontinued before the 71's....?
What would you recommend....drill the holes for the rub strips
on the 71 bumper or find a 72 rear bumper?
I have a "like new" pair of rub strips (for the rear) I got off eBay for $50.00
    Thanks, AL :puzzled:

Wow! Good Score!! I paid over $300.00 for mine. If you have a good 71 bumper you could drill it but this would be a "PIA" but would be worth wile if you have a good 71 rear. Just if you do drill it take you time because the the locating holes need correct spacing and apply some paint in the holes you drilled. Good Luck!! :beer AL

Since the 1971 bumper is in bad shape and needs to be rechromed,
I might look for a good 72 (get it rechromed if necessary)
to go with the "like new" rub strips. Should look sharp.
Here in Ohio they want $500+ to rechrome (rear bumpers).....,
but it is one big "hunk" of chrome.

Thanks again..."you made my day"! AL

In your case I would look for another 72 rear bumper. The price is not bad on the chrome work, last I heard was over a $1000.00 and thats nuts!! You know you could do the N-25 thing :Brow: , there is a member who sells you a N-25 bumper and takes yours as a core, he has a source to punch out the holes for the tail pipes. Just another option  . AL.

I've been using Pauls Custom Chrome in Evans Pa. The only problem is I heard back from some of the members that there prices are getting out of reach, AL.

    Rubber Strips

On the 72 Buicks, the rubber bumper strips went from being standard in the beginning of the model year, to being an extra-cost option around January of 1972. My 72 Salesman's Book shows the change as of January 1, 1972. It's a way to increase prices, since I bet not many cars were actually delivered without the optional strips.

The assembly manual shows 4 rear bumpers used on Skylark coupes and sedans, one has no notation after the number so that must be the no-strips bumper, one says it's for N-25 option only - no strips, one more says its for cars with the VE5 option(the strips), and the last one is for cars with both N25 and VE5. So it's possible to have an original 72 Skylark without the strips. The assembly manual shows the no-strip bumpers as a change to the original data.

I'd be curious to see if they are missing from one of those plain-jane post coupes that pop up once in a while.

    Thanks

Appreciate the info...you are probably right, very few
72's came without rear bumper rub strips.
I have the strips, I just need to get the bumper rechromed!
(71 bumper? on car/ 72 bumper off car)
    Gotta Love It!
