I own a 1972 Skylark 4 Door with a 350 in it. I am thinking I have to replace my power steering pump. At low and no speeds its whines real loud and doesn't want to turn the wheels. I'm still fixing the car up, I bought it as a project. I was wondering if it was terribly difficult to replace myself, or how to rebuild it if possible, any help is appreciated.

Hello there, thank you. I am in San Diego. I was just operating the vehicle without the belt going to the power steering pump, would that cause any harm to the steering linkage? It wouldn't be for very long, I don't have a lot of money to spend at one time, so I try to do most of the non major stuff myself, so far I've put on a new carb, a new radiator, water pump, I'm putting in an alternator since a piece inside my generator decided to break off, and I've installed a kill to the ignition coil, and the electric choke. I'll be sending it into a transmission shop in the next few weeks for a transmission rebuild.

Driving it with no belt will cause NO damage. Have you checked the fluid level. Low fluid level is the most common cause of whine. Replacing the pump is not difficult at all as long as you are mechanically inclined. Not everyone is.
