I just looked at a '72 Riv with the SunCoupe option. The person who did the top covered over the sun roof, so I'm thinking there's something seriously wrong for them to do that. Also, on the lower part of the pillar there seems to places for the SunCoupe emblems. How rare are these cars? The car is custom with purple tweed interior that has awesome craftsmanship done to it and a black exterior with purple flames. It also has a top with the material they use for carriage tops replacing the vinyl. Other than that the car is solid and driveable. He wants $4500 for it, but I think I can get it for $4000. What's a solid #3 Riviera worth?
sunroof 72 Rivs did have a sunroof option at some part of the 72 production run, but I don't think it was called or considered a 'Sun Coupe". It was a regular type sunroof and not the canvas type.
Did it have emblems along the pillar noting the sunroof option? Under the top there are indentations where it seems an emblem would be. This car has the bucket seats and console which are redone with the custom interior. Does anyone specialize in repairing the sunroofs?
Hopefully you get it for the price you want Rob. Then we''ll need some pics of this beauty. ___________ Rob 1972 Rviera
The cars are somewhat rare, I owned a 72 GS buckets and console Riviera at one time with the factory sunroof. I've only seen a few others advertised in quite a few years of watching. The sunroof can be a pain if they need adjustment. There is a special 1972 Buick manual for it, I have one someplace but can't put my hands on it right now. I sold the car at the Buick Nat's in Sacramento, 1991 I believe. Dan
I'm not sure if this is a GS since all the emblems are off. What's the Vin to indicate whether or not it's a GS? Also, is there a letter or number telling if the car is equipped with the stage 1 engine? Thanks.
The best way to tell if the car is all kosher is engine letters, which are different on GS (code WA); that along with matching engine and body vin gives you the GS. All GS Riv's in 71 and 72 had what they called the Stage 1 engine. In 73, the options were seperate. The following is from the rivowners site pertaining to the 71, 72: The GS option in these two years were very similar in that an modified engine was part of the package, which offered an additional 10-15 hp over the standard engine. Once again the chromed air cleaner lid was included. Beginning with the '72 model the vin# included the letter "W" to indicate that the car was equipped with the optional Stage 1 engine. As in '70 there was no additional Stage 1 decals or emblems on the car. The GS option included the engine a well as the ride and handling package and posi rear axle with a 3.42 ratio. The fender emblems changed once again with a return to the Riviera script located behind the front wheels. The script had a new sleeker look for the first time. The red GS emblems, similar to the one used from 67-70, were positioned below the script rather than behind, as in previous years. Dan
I know why your mixing it up with the sun coupe. It has a half vinal roof and I've seen little Riviera script emblems on the pillar. By the way I couldn't find a riv with a moon roof after a year of searchin' for a one. Did anyone mention www.buick-riviera.nl to you somewhere in the sight it gives percentages on how many Rivs came with what options.
Wow, 3.5% came with the sunroof. The only problem is if it's broke, what part's are available to fix it with so little made?
1175 72 Rivs came with sunroofs. One catch was that the car also had to have power windows -- I'm not sure why though. The dealer facts book says that the roof was available with or without a vinyl roof. And mid year in 72, Buick offered a half vinyl roof on Rivs. There wasn't any 'R' emblem on the sail panel though, that came in 73. If you want a really rare car, there were only 112 1972 Electra coupes with sunroofs. And for the utimate in rarity, one 4 door hardtop with a sunroof.
This car had the indentation for an emblem along the pillar, but it's a '72 front-end. I'm thinking someone might have switched the front-ends around and the body itself is a '73. I haven't received the vin nunber as I think I'm just going to pass on it. I'll have to ask the guy selling it to look it up to see what year it really is.
:bglasses: I have one.... in my avatar ..... I always wondered how many they made w/sunroofs :Brow: thanks Mark
Since, your probably going to pass it doesn't matter much. But I would think you could get parts from a Caddy.
