a have a 72 lesabre cutom with a 350 4B w/ a th350 12 inch output shaft and was wondering how to determine what it has for rear end stock gears...o No:
Yup, 3.08 would have been standard, unless somebody optioned it differently. Only way to know for sure is to either find the body sheet, count rotations or open it up and find the tooth-count stampings. Easiest to count rotations - chalk the driveshaft and watch as you slowly roll the car; or jack up one tire, put the trans in neutral, spin the free tire (1/2 rev or 2 revs, I just confused myself???).
Thanks! :beer I've got 3.08's as well, they're a nice all-around gear. Unless you're only going racing, I wouldn't go any deeper than 3.42, or you'll be wound up like a banshee at highway speeds. If I were going to change my gears, I'd look for some 3.23 or so. But for my purposes, I'll keep the 3.08's - and if I ever get serious about hitting a track regularly, then I'll get some extra wheels and shorter tires to fake the lower gears. :3gears:
My first hot rod was a 72 lesabre custom. Pulled the 350 put a 455 and a posi from a 72 boattail riv and had that 5000 pounder going 14.00's!!! Also had the buckets and console from the riv in there. In 1991 I swear I was the first bucket seat 14 second La sabre in town. Bought that car for 200, worked on it, then when the time came I threw in the 455 and t400 from the same riv,( The engine is in my now current 65 lark) it started and shifted fine and sold it for 4 g's!!!!!:TU: Love the big cars forever now.
oh man your a life saver...i have a thread asking about a bucket swap...so the 72 riv bucket are a straight mockup match or is there a little drilling involved...my bench is uuuuuncomfortable...
Every thing bolts in except you need to drill the inside seat holes. I used the entire console and shifter too. And it looked factory when I was done.
