What is the difference between the 1972 Stage 1 heads and the standard 455 heads as it relates to the casting numbers? I have a set of heads on my engine #1238148. The engine is not the correct year for my car; however, I may rebuild it to trade for a 1971 when the oppurtunity presents itself.

There was a link on line that gave all the casting numbers and their usage. I think the heads were the same in 1971 (valves are different of course) but I don't remember what the 1972 said.

    Thanks for your help.

Casting #'s are the same for standard and Stage1 heads, any year, I believe. Stage 1 heads are standard heads opened up to accept the bigger valves.

    1231738 (455) 1970 & 1971
    1238861 (455) 1971

These are the two casting numbers shown for 1971 455 blocks. Does anyone know if there is a difference between the two blocks?

Thanks. I saw that site today; there is another site that has the Stage 1 blocks also named. I also believe they are the same castings.

Same castings on the block, different two-letter codes.

    71 Stage1 code is TS

Anyone have any info on why there are two casting numbers for 1971 blocks?
    Thanks

One is probably a single scallop, the other is double scallop with different core holes. You just need to watch which head gaskets you use.

I thought the double scallop was a mid year 72 change....not mid year 71.:Do No:
