looking to buy a 71 gs 455 its average condition,supposedly has original motor and tranny,and he says it has a 12 bolt posi with 256 gears.turbo 400 tranny,air speed alert,rear window defogger,tilt,exhaust goes through the bumper,power window.vinyl top.buckets and console.thanks for the help.
Pictures would make it much easier to give you a ballpark number. Sounds like it has some good options but the 2.56 rear axle is a bummer.
Sounds like the axle is a transplant. A 1971 GS455 would have come from the the factory with an 8.5 10 bolt. 1971 cars are the hardest to document without paperwork.
Larry, There are quite a few documented 72 Framimgham Mass. cars that came with Chevy 12-bolts and 2.56 open rears. I would not want to bet against some 71's also coming that way. The build sheets have a code of "OK" for the rear axle. Duane
I think Framingham used that rear combination regardless of the body style number on the car. Maybe they didn't stock any "Buick" 2.56 rears, I mean they were a GMAD Final assembly plant, so why would they use a Buick rear if they already had the Chevy (GMAD) rears available? To them a rear was a rear. If it is not a Framingham car, then yes I would say it is a transplant. Duane PS. What other brand cars were built at Framingham?
Its certainly worth more with the 12bolt,..ha Without pics its between a 5500 rust box with a good option load or a decent 15k driver with a good option load
I think Jimmy worked there in the later 80's when Corsica's and or the other GM cousins of that car were being made.. I took a tour of the Framingham plant in I believe 1979 when I was i high school and it was Regal's and Cutlasses' that were being made. It was odd to see a Regal followed by a Cutlass right behind at times come down on the line.. I can still picture the crates and crates of Buick rally and Olds rally wheels stacked up 3 story's high.. I was still in high school like I mentioned and working part time and kept thinking to myself that they have so many Buick Rally wheels, that they wouldn't miss giving a poor old kid just 4 of them

It could the vin would verify it is a factory GS but will not let you know if it is a big block or big small block
Is it possible Olds T400's were also used on a GS? Tearing down my 73, which we have had since 1974 and never replaced the T400, we found we had an Olds T400 much to our surprise. Car is definitely a GS so we were scratching our heads to see this.
I owned a ‘71 Stage 1 once upon a time and it had an Oldsmobile “OW” transmission. It was numbers matching to the car. IIRC it had something to do with a strike at the time. That car was built in Flint though.
Yes the VIN would help. If it is an Olds rear, could be the one with the "Type O" 12 bolt cover and 10 bolt ring gear. https://oldsjunction.classicoldsmobile.com/oldsfaq/ofdif.htm Common in 1971 because of the Hydramatic strike. The OW is correct.
Do you have any pictures? What colors are the car? Hard to tell what it’s worth without seeing the car.
