1971 Buick Points & condenser

Discussion in 'Wet behind the ears??' started by Doug Christense, Sep 15, 2003.

  1. I'm trying to replace the points and condenser in my 1971 Centurion 455 but the car won't run now that the new parts are installed. Not a big surprise since I'm a novice at this but just trying to learn more about my car and how it works.

The car would start and run just fine before I attempted this repair. Can someone share with me the procedure for this fix? I'm curious to know what I've done wrong or what I'm overlooking. I'm trying to do this without using a dwell meter.

    I need a lesson here.

    points and condenser

doug, gm stopped using points and condensers after 1974.i remember them well. first make sure you have the ignition rotor on right.next make sure the condenser wire is screwed down tight next to the points. if these are o.k. you probably are off with the gap on the points. youll need an allen head wrench to adjust the points. as your adjusting the points try and start the engine. be very careful you dont get your hands caught in the fan!once you get the car running youll still need a dwell meter for an accurate adjustment. you should think about switching over to electronic ignition. no points to worry about and very reliable. good luck

:Smarty: Always check the timing also when you get the points set and she's running .

    Good Luck !:TU: :TU:

  4. Thanks

With all this advise I'm receiving, I should have my convertible up and running in no time! Just in time for the Oregon rains to begin.....
