first off it has to be reliable.
second off I am will to up the compression ratio
    only naturally aspirated tho.
I was told not to exceed 9 to 1 compression so that is as high as i want it to go.
    any ideas?

and please keep in mind that this is my first time doing engine work
so I'm mainly looking for bolt on parts, but i do have the tuning end off the deal covered as well.

Go to the T/A website and do a little snooping- a nice cam, some mild head work, manifold, carb ( a good well set up quadrajet is fine ) & headers should put you right there- 300 is not that much really so you can keep it pretty simple. I'd go with a hydraulic cam- less maintenance & quieter running. Also look into getting an HEI distributor to reliably light things off- you wont need to go with an MSD or such at your goal. Also invest in an ARP bolt kit-cheap insurance. And others may debate- but I'd also pop for forged pistons just in case you ever decide to spray it.:beer

First you need to decide if you want 300 horses at the flywheel or at the rear wheels. That will change things a bit.
