What causes a water pump to leak from its mounting bolts? If its only one or two, can removing the bolts and coating them with RTV sealant stop the leak or does the whole unit need to be removed and reinstalled?

For the cost of a gasket I would remove, clean & reseal. Pretty sure the bolt holes are surrounded by gasket material.

Only risk here is getting the bolts out without snapping one.

I use liquid Teflon on the ones going into the water jacket. Many people use Teflon tape but at work and home I prefer the liquid type. Others also have used a little RTV with just as good results.

Thanks guys. The pump was replaced awhile back with the engine rebuild and is new not a remanufactured one. I just put some RTV around one of the lower smaller bolts (7/16) where I think I was leaking from. When I pulled the bolt out it was wet and some fluid followed. Hopefully it works!

i ,too, had a similar problem with leaking about the long bolts on the waterpump. cure was some blue loctite on those bolts because those bolts actually enter the waterjacket. no more leaks.

I have used Permatex antisieze with good effect to cure this as well.
