I'm not sure how rare they are but they did make Stage1 Rivs and it looks like you might have found one! The only way to verify Stg 1 is to pull one of the heads and check the valve size. Not sure if it is indicated in the VIN on the Rivs or not. Cheap? Buy it

Stage 1 Riviera GS should have enginecode SS.

But the book "American V8 Engines" says this:

In 1970 there were three versions of the 455 engine:
    350 HP, 360 HP Stage 1 and the 370 HP Riviera 455

So the original SF code engine was rated higher........ :Do No: ?

    Further reading:

The highest horsepower-producing 455 CI engine was de 1970 Stage 1,
which put out an advertised 360 HP.
The Riviera 455 CI was advertised at 370 HP,
but the Stage 1 put out more power

There was a Stage 1 option on the 1970 Riviera GS models,
but how many were fitted with the Stage 1 is not known.

1970 VIN doesn't tell you anything about the engine or GS option.

Try to look for the carburator number :Smarty:

I don't think anybody really knows the HP. I was told it was between 385-400 HP check carb.# should be 7040246, dist. #should be 112016 and see if there is a ss between # 5-7 cylinder if there is then you know you have a stage 1 block

I could use some '66 Riv parts like seatbelts, power windows and exterior emblems, are you going to part it? Is the '70 Riv a bucket seats car? If you buy that one and part it, I would be interested in the bucket seats, console and shifter.

Where has anyone seen a Stage 1 option listed from Buick on a 70 Riviera? I have only seen one engine listed for 1970 Riviera. If there is something that shows Buick installed Stage 1 engines in 1970 Rivieras, please share it.
