I'd like to replace the modern radio that I have in my car with a correct AM/FM radio. I don't really care if it works as long as it the right one.

How do I identify the correct radio for a 1970 GS?

    Thanks.

I don't care if mine is the right one only that it works.:Do No: They all look the same 70-72 so no big deal.

For what it's worth, the 1970 Delco radio repair manual lists the following model numbers for Buicks:

    04APB1 ..... AM Pushbutton
    04AFP1 ..... AM/FM Pushbutton
    04BFM1 ..... AM/FM Stereo Pushbutton w/ multiplex adapter

Note that that last model is for a B-body, not A-body, so I don't know it it fits the A-body (I assume not).

The manual also lists 4 other models of radios for B- and E-body Buicks.

Real strange Buick did not offer stereo on skylark body before 73 at least. Olds did. Maybe it would not fit? The 70 Olds used a two part radio but went to one piece in 71 so I think it should fit.

Does anyone know if a 04BFM1 (or 2) would fit in to a '70 Skylark since I believe the multiplexer and rear speaker amplifier is a separate unit and heatsinks are on the side? ....or any AM/FM period-correct stereo radio in a Skylark for that matter?

The problem with putting a period-correct GM Stereo AM/FM radio in a '70-'72 Skylark has always been the depth of the radio (too deep to fit in the dash), but a unit with a separate FM modulator, I'd think might fit.

I have 4 radios at my disposal. The measurements are (none including the extra depth for the connectors on the rear):
    - - - 14BFP2 ('71 big (Electra 225) AM/FM mono) - overall depth including faceplate 8.25", depth of metal case 6.75", shaft spacing 5.75" and plastic faceplate depth 1.5"
    - - - 34BFM4 ('73 big (Riviera) Am/FM stereo) 8.25", 6.75", 5.75", ~1 3/8"
    - - - 70HFP1 ('77 ?? ('72 Centurion) - may have been refitted AM/FM mono) - 8.00", 6.75", 5.75" 1.25"
    - - - and this one I know fits a skylark - 14APB1 ('71 midsize (Skylark) AM) 6.75", 5.25", ~6.5", ~1 5/8"
    I can't seem to find the depth dimensions for a 04BFM1 -

    for example, this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/1970-Buick-...=&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Then of course is the shaft spacing issue of ~0.5" difference as well.

In that case could I retro fit a Buick faceplate on this?

Are there any other division's AM/FM stereo radios which will fit which I could put a Buick faceplate on?

This thread is several years old. We suggest you start your own thread.(... and purchase an A body Buick radio.)
