TorqueMonster1 Making My GS Great Again!

I need a fan shroud for my 70 GS 455. I have been told that originals don't exist and that if there is a NOS around it would be hard to find and even harder to pay for. SO, Whats a fella to do?? I have heard of reproduced ones that are fiberglass. I have also heard of repos that are ABS plastic. Does anyone know anything about either choice? Are they great, good, ok or pitiful?? I gotta do something. Thanks for the feedback. I hope I posted this question in the correct place, I wasn't for sure to to post it. Mark

Yes, an original used 70 fan shroud is going to be a little pricey. You may need a second mortgage to finance an NOS one if you could even find one. Finding a unicorn may prove easier.

A good second choice would be to get a 69 GS400 shroud and install it. Its only slightly different and requires only a little modification to install in a 70. 90% of the people looking at your car wouldn't know the difference. Only a real Buick GS nerd would be able to tell.

Fiberglass repros are OK, but need alot of finishing work to make them look acceptable. The ABS repros aren't very good but are better than nothing.

Yeah, your best bet is to try and find a 69 GS400 one. Still not an easy find, but much easier than a 1970 one. They do have to be modified ever so slightly to fit, but they look almost the same and only a Buick nut will know the difference. And if you want original, get ready. And I mean like hundreds or more ready.

Here's the web site and what needs to be done to make it fit perfectly: http://www.buickperformanceclub.com/FanShroudModification.htm

And here's the one on ebay that many use: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1970-Buick-...ash=item519ce61a3a:g:lgwAAOSwOVpXVgb1&vxp=mtr

I may have a super nice original up for sale in the near future. This one will look very close to NOS, not painted as some restored are. But will be very pricey.

What exactly do you mean by "the fiberglass repos need a lot of work to look acceptable"? Are the mounting tabs in the correct place? Please explain. ALSO, I take it that the original and NOS 70 shrouds are plastic. If so were they just raw unpainted plastic shrouds or was there more to it? Thank You, Mark

Not sure how to describe the fiberglass repros. They look a little unfinished. And the mounting tabs look too thick. They just look "off".

There is basically no such thing as an NOS/ new 70 fan shroud. Its a unicorn. Kinda like a smoking hot chick that not crazy. Doesnt really exist. The only thing you'll find is a used original. The originals are made from a fiberglass(?) reinforced plastic. Theyre not exactly black. More of a really dark gray

ALSO, What about a 71 or a 72 shroud for a GS 455?? How do they compare to a 70 shroud? Close in appearance or very different? Are they available? Expensive? Thanks, mark

Well, I believe I understand how a 69 shroud could work. I understand how rear/expensive a 70 shroud is. I understand (for the most part) about ABS plastic and fiberglass shrouds. SO, How Would A 71-72 GS 455 Fan Shroud work on a 70 GS 455?? Appearance? Fit? Availability? Price? Thank You All!! Mark

There are a lot of 70 455 cars running around with 71/72 shrouds. Fits just fine. A nice 71/72 shroud should be readily available they fit more than just GS-455's. Rivieras took the same one.

Ok, I'm gonna bite, but it's killing me... I thought that the radiator cover plate were the same year to year on the big cars and skylarks (example:71 Big'um same as 71 GS), and similarly the fan shrouds. If so, I guess that I know where I can find my retirement income...at a local junk yard that keeps EVERYTHING! (Yes cars from the 40's up til last week's wreck/engine tranny fail that costs more to fix than the casr would be worth.)

Does that require a different length water pump?

Umm, I don't think a shroud from a 1971-72 Riviera is going to fit a Skylark. Don't they have integrated overflow bottles on them?

Not in that year. In 71 and 72. all big blocks used the same shroud. That's why the 71/72 shrouds are so much cheaper than the 70's
