Trying to figure out what engine is in my 1970 GS 350. On the left bank on the front of the block, the following is stamped:

B9E66449. This should match the vin, which it doesn't and this doesn't even seem to be a vin number. B could be Baltimore assembly plant, 9 = 1969 not sure what E means (there is no E assembly plant), but even so the vin numbers didn't follow this order.

    Really confused.

In between the 1st & 3rd spark plugs, NOTHING is stamped. Where else on the engine are the ID Numbers?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Factory replacement block under warranty I believe.

If the deck of the block was milled off then the SP may not be visible anymore. If so your 350 may be even HOTTER than you think.

    Really?

Okay, so that number may just be a part number then?

Thanks so much for your help gentlemen. BTW - Sean Buick 76. Awesome videos!! You have to check out the Canadian in the Wildcat doing a burnout. Too much!!

Look again on the surface of the block between 1 and 3 cylinders for a two digit code, it should be there but you might
need to use some sandpaper to make it visible. The vin should be posted on the engine you are right, but the engine could have been changed. Even if it is not a SP code engine it could have been rebuilt to sp specs or better so you never know untill you open it up.

I guess my curiousity lies with the fact that the numbers aren't a vin number. I looked up how VIN numbers are coded all the way through 1981. I know it's hard to see, and quite blurry but you can see that there is only 5 digits at the end and the whole number is B9E66449.

Yeah - we had trouble reading that second number. Looks like it MAY a "0" but really looks like a "9". Would this be from a 1969 car?

Thanks Dan, looks like our mystery is solved. I know the carb is correct but the trans # is 48z159451, so since they didn't start with the TH350 until 69, this would be a 1978 trans? It had some metric bolts on it as well.

Thanks so much for all of your help. Just trying to get this thing running right. There was a rattle in the bellhousing and I think I figured out what the problem was. Below are pics of the flexplate. Plus the numbers stamped on the trans.

    Enjoy!!

Here you go, I wish I could figure out what engine is in it. Are the blocks for the 1969 and 70 identical?

I could be wrong but i thought you could see the sp code between 3 and 5 sometimes as well. On my 70 gs its between 1 and 3 though.
