Piced up a 70 electra the other day for parts, has a rear that i have not seen before. Almost looks like a 14bolt truck rear. Can anyone help me out hear, to what size this is. BuickSmtiho No:
It should be a 9 3/8 ring gear.... Kind of square looking cover with 10 bolts holding it on. The ring gear has 12 bolts.
Thanks alot for the info. Does anyone know if it is a very popular rear? How are parts to find? What gear ratios? ext. Also dose anyone know if the axils on a 71 riv 12bolt can be narowed. Or would i need to make new ones. BuickSmith
Does anyone know if it is a very popular rear? mwuhahahahaha. if by popular you mean everybody is looking for gears.... check this thread over in the boat forum: http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=71740 How are parts to find? you can probably find bearings but gear sets and carriers are NOS or junk yard only. Also dose anyone know if the axils on a 71 riv 12bolt can be narowed. i suppose so but why would you? you'd wind up with the exact same aftermarket support problem you've got now (the 1971-1976 9 3/8" doesn't have any more support than the earlier rear). it would be far cheaper in the long run to find an 8.5" rear out of a 70 or earlier GM small block B-body car or just go for a custom Ford 9". Or would i need to make new ones. you have the production facilities for this?
BuickSmith: If you want to sell that rear, assuming it is a 9 3/8" unit, there is a board member looking for one. Where are you located? Paul
I am in Killdeer ND. 30 mi north on hwy 22 out of dickinson. I will look fri night to see what the tag on the rear says. Later. BuickSmith
Hello Again, Sorry it took so long, to get back to you guys. I looked at the rear this weekend. It has the factory tag on it for the "lsd". I did not take the cover off. I did turn the driveshaft ad had my brother mark the hub. Looks like its about a 2:43. BuickSmith
