I have a friend that has collected cars for 60+ years he has decided to sell all his cars he would never sell or price any he has everything from a Gremlin to a Super Bird some restored but most original untouched from good to junk as for Buicks he has offered me a 1954 Buick Woody Wagon ruff; But the reason for this post is he has a 70 Buick GS stage 2 or so thats what the bagging says on the car how can I tell if its really a stage 2 the articles on line say only 2 were made that cant be right any help ? Thank you Don I will have pictures Thursday
Pretty easy to spot the Stage2 heads. My car wears the production Stage2 heads, but also have the preproduction vertical boss heads that was used in testing for the program
It’s east to tell if the engine is a vintage Stage 2, look at the heads, the headers will be 2 1/8 in diameter tubes and have a bolt on top between the middle 2 exhaust ports. The other parts besides the Holley 850 would be internal. The dealer may very well have built one who knows. If the heads are aluminum then he has a engine with TA heads.
An authentic work order invoice would prove it was dealer installed. So far with all my intensive research, I have yet to come across a dealer installed Stage2 in any variance. So it’s not likely.
Getting back to Dennis Manner. He GAVE the full Stage2 package including the whole painted stage2 hood, air pan, and steel scoop (only two were produced) to Reynolds Buick with in conjunction with Kennedy Bell for real on track feedback. The point is Buick didn’t sell the parts but rather donated for in return the results. Pete Reynolds himself told me they blew up quite a few motors testing for Buick. And they would send numerous new short blocks by ways of the “back door” (remember the racing ban at factory level was banned) through Bill Trever’s Buick training center.
Pictures of the engine (especially heads) would help and any documentation he has on the car. The woody sounds nice if its restorable!
You have been very help full will try to get pictures today or tomorrow will get a few of the Woodie also I have way too many cars like most of us and getting older I am 69 and still have a Body Shop but only do 2 or 3 cars a year complete tear downs and re paints dont have any help now my long time friend and help died last year so if anyone here is intrested in the cars I will offer them here first I restored as 66 Wild Cat a few years ago and everyone on this site was very helpful with parts and things Thanks Don
So after taking a closer look at the car looks to me its not a dealer car just some ones idea of a stage 2
