What are some of the changes between the 70 thru 72 Skylark, if any? Looking to restore one just not quite sure what year I want. Thanks, Jesse
Some visual differences I can think of 1970 ======== grill hood chrome headlight bezels Front/rear bumpers/tail lights etc GS air cleaner is a 70-71 only design GS hood vents are 70 and 72 1970-1971 ======== bumpers interchange, except 72 has a rubber strip on front bumper and rubber around tail lights. 71 has no rubber I believe 71 and 72 headlight bezels are different In 72 skylark and GS used same grill GS air cleaner is 72 only GS hood vents are 71 only A quick easy way to tell them apart is by the bumpers 1970 front bumper has a lower section in the middle 1971 front bumper is straight across the top with no rubber strip 1972 front bumper is straight across with rubber impact strip on the leading edge 1970 rear bumper is a one year only too 1971 rear bumper, no rubber around tail lights 1972 rear bumper, rubber around the tail lights
All parts will interchange but probably the biggest was all 3 years are unique in design to them selves as front and rear bumpers, headlight bezels, hood nose trim, grilles, tail lights, and hood scoop insert grilles. The 70-71 ram air portion of the air cleaner is different than a 72, the 70 used an 8.2 rear and 71-72 used the 8.5, there are alot of other small things. Curtis's pictures pretty much tell the story.
You're not alone, most do, including myself. I just sold my 72, and am now in search of a 70 GS 455 :TU: The problem is that 1970's cost more You can get more 71 and 72 for your money :dollar: uzzled:
The interior is different. The rear end is different for a 70 versus 71-2. The gas tank is different. Parking lights and license tag holder are different.
Hey, it's my first post in this place...ever! Looking forward to many more. Looks like one helluva site. OK..my question is: What do you mean when you wrote "8.5 corporate rear good too"? Are you referring to the drop in compression from the G.S. 455's 1970 to '71...I know it went from 10.0 to 8.5. Thank you Joel

I think the rear end in a 70 differential was 8.2" 71+ was 8.5" Many more options to upgrade a 8.5 vs 8.2
Sorry...been away... as said '70 had different rear...harder to find parts. The newer 8.5 was used in other GM cars...and for many years...easier to find parts. As for unleaded...not just drop in compression, but exhaust valves and tune for lower octane gas. I know '70 was peak of musclecar-era with highest performance...therefore most sought-after, I just wanted to be able to cruise without a rebuild or gas additive...
