Still trying to put my 70 gs 455 4spd back together.

Can anyone recommend good power steering and alternator belts to use?

Also, does anyone repro the valve cover to air cleaner hose? New?

    Thanks again,

    Tom

If the looks do not bother you Dayco belts sold by Advance but they have the cuts on top. I like the fit bet than Goodyear or Gates.

    Jim,

Thanks for the quick response, I really appreciate it! When I bought this car it only took me 2 weeks to completely disassemble it. I'm now approaching 2 years to put it back together! Guess I should stick to race cars.

    Thanks again!

    GStage1 Always looking for parts!

PS belts with the lower ps brkt set-up from a 71-2 uses 15-440 to 15-450
    Alternator is 15-490

If you have the large AC clutch as found on 3.42 rear cars, use 15-640
    regular clutch size uses 15-625

    George,

Thanks! You don't have number for original 1970 high mount PS do you? I stopped at Advance tonight and they don't list any part numbers for 1970 GS 455 so I got the ones for 1971 and of course neither one is correct. I will order the correct alternator belt...

Go to Autozone.....they list the belt sizes on their system and I verified that with the 71 GS Stg1 I am restoring.

I didn't look for the 70 set-up on their system.

Since no one makes the belts with no cogs anymore I like the Gates better as at least the slits are on the bottom. I cannot use those ugly top cog jobs. Sorry Jim. Here are some 70 listings i found for Dayco in an Olds parts book.

    Fan (with 2 1/4" alt Pully) 15495
    PS 15505
    AC (sm. pully) 15635
    AC (big Pully) 15650

These parts listings have the last three digits as the length. 15485 would be a 48.5 " belt etc. There may be a .5" difference in lenght between brands for a given belt I have found. I don't have Gates numbers off hand but you can do cross reference.

I know what you are saying about looks. I have tried all three brands. The Daycos in motion always appear to ride the pulleys better without slop in the belts. You are mistaken about no one making belts without cogs any more in sense of the bottom side. The Dayco is made without a cogged botom side just like the original GM belts which is one reason maybe why they seem to ride the pulleys better. Both the Gates and the Goodyears have a cogged ( toothed) bottoms but the patterns are not the same. The appearance issue is the Daycos have the narrow cross cut slits on the topside.

    Joe,

Dayco 15495 for water pump/alternator (15490 would also work)
    Dayco 15505 for PS

    About $15 each at Advance.

Jim, I meant to say cogs or slits in tops or bottoms. The original GMs had nothing in them, cogs or slits so appearance is out the window either way. The slits in the tops are more conspicuous but if you think they fit better I may have to try them. Ames Pontiac sells original style repros with no cogs but list by year and not size. I may have to check with them and see if sizes are the same. You never know. Chances are maybe one will fit but not all three. Like hitting the lottery.
