Got a small issue with my 10 Bolt posi in that it is often spinning up only one wheel. I suspect the clutches are worn. Does anyone do a clutch kit for these? If so who/where? Any advice welcomed.
Yep, Cone type unit if it is a ORIGINAL factory unit. The cone and or cones would need to be machined and the carrier spider gears checked for clearance and wear issue, reshimmed and assembled and bench checked. We do this and are completing one right now from a Pontiac. 1966 Lemans PM for pricing. What ratio do you have. Other options are to just replace the complete posi unit . I have provided trouble areas your cone type unit will have. ALL red arrows show trouble area in this units WHICH has them ALL!!! LOL. Spider gears ate up the pinion spider shaft almost welding them together. The cones are BOTH bottomed out in the case Tower. So this one will be expensive to recondition as it needs parts which are obsolete and will need to be match with other good used spiders on the market or on the parts shelf. Take care, Jim J D
Thanks for the info Guys, Jim, I would love to send it to you for repairs but I am a little too far away for that to be practical. I can deal with worn shafts and other obvious mechanical issues but how do you deal with cones bottoming out on the case tower? What sort of machining is required? Is it possible that the pre-load springs are a little slack? How much spring shimming is advisable? Thanks again.
WILL NOT MATTER HOW MUCH YOU preload the springs. Your cones are bottomed out. IT is hitting the tower at the bottom of the case. You can put ton of pressure and all you will do is burn metal and weld your spiders together. PM me and we might be able to call or you call us...?? Jim Will need email access too for pictures.
Not too high jack, but..... is a 1969 the same cone style rear end? Mine just started to spin the right side more since I put on the drag radials.
Crap! I better pop my cover off to see what is happening in there. I had it off 6,000 miles ago, and everything looked nifty then. Thanks for the info, James
