I swear I saw a discussion regarding the B4B shifting the carb to a position where the air cleaner was not aligned properly with the hood scoops. I searched the forum high and low but no dice. So -- True or false?
True. The B4B centers the carb on the intake, and the factory one is set back a bit. The Edelbrock performer is set back like the factory one, though.
True. On my 69 with the B4B the stock air cleaner rubs the seal plates on the hood. It is also about 3/4" forward. Had to make an extension for the heat riser pipe. Needless to say I generally use the stock air cleaner at shows where I plan on opening the hood.
So -- back in the day when Buick sold 1969 Stage 2 packages over the counter with B4B's -- same fitment issue, or was there a version that maintained alignment?
Same fitment issue. The B4B centers the carburetor on the intake, trying to equalize air flow. Not designed to really work with the stock air cleaner.
Yes, B4B means Buick 4 barrel. My buddy has a P4B Edelbrock manifold for a Pontiac motor, which he wants to sell BTW.
I ran my setup Offenhauser for a long time. It picked up low end torque. Only downside is the offset crush pattern on the foam.
It will work just use flat Phillips screws to fasten the seal plates,..I've ran several that way,..you can also trim 1/4in off the back side of the seal plate to gain clearance
If you want an intake that positions the carb in the same position as the factory get an Edelbrock Performer intake. The inlets line up the same although the carb is about 1" higher than stock so the foams crush more than they should. You can clearly see the B4B centers the carb on the intake giving a slight performance increase compared to the Performer. https://www.edelbrock.com/performer...ick-400-455-v8-non-egr-satin-finish-2146.html https://www.edelbrock.com/buick-b-4b-intake-manifold-for-big-block-buick-400-455-engines-2515.html
I would guess that most people swapping over to the Stage 2 package would also be using the Stage 2 scoop which would negate any alignment issues with the GS air cleaner and the factory GS hood. But maybe my memory is too fuzzy and the Stage 2 scoop wasn't readily available until after the switch over to 1970 model year.
