He verified the VIN on the engine..

So worst case here is it's a numbers match GS 400 4 speed ragtop.

He's going to want 20-40K for it and barring any massive rust or unknown issues, it's a real good buy at 20K if it's a STG 1 4 speed car. Restored and documented (if there is a build sheet in it) then it's certainly the high point in price for a 68/9 car, although I don't know if the current ecomony will support 6 figures for it. And the exterior paint color is not the biggest draw to most folks. Red, Black, or blue would be more appealing to the masses.

Keep in mind it's a repaint, so buyer beware when it comes to the body..

If you are really interested just get it in writing that if you win the bid and discover the the block stamp is not correct, you have the right to back out with a refund of your down payment. Of course I'm assuming you'd be going to get it and could verify code before final payment took place.

I'd guess its likely a legit car. Us number-nuts are so used to the world revolving around them its easy to forget they just aren't a concern to some people.

I went through a similar process on a "factory" dual quad 66 Riv GS. The guy was bad with numbers and was dyslexic. He was 2500 miles away so looking at it was out of the question. Talk about being nervous making a purchase! Because of the sellers inability to accurately put all the numbers together, at least one guy and probably more passed on the car. It turned out to be a complete number matching car one of 179.

Jim is on the money with what he wants, here is an excerpt from an email I got from him:

I HAVE A LITTLE OVER $22K IN THIS CAR. I WAS NEEDING TO GET BACK MY INVESTMENT.

Clearly this car would need to be restored, probably another $20k - $40k???? Don't know what it would sell for when done, as there haven't been many 69 Stage 1 4 speed convert sales since the blue one (I think it was a 4 speed) two years or so ago (won't mention the buyer's name in case he wants it kept private)and Tony's a year or two before that in the twenties.

I think 6 figures would definitely be a stretch, unless Rick Hendrick or the equivalent is looking for one (like the BJ auction for $125k). Before that sale, I think most 69 people would say $50k was a stretch.

Not sure how much the 4 speed adds to the price over an automatic, but you could buy a real nice numbers matching automatic Stage 1 convertible with air and buckets in the thirties.

I was high bidder on the car and am planning on heading down to see it and hopefully work out a deal on it, I know he wants more, but a visual inspection is in order before determing how much more I will be willing to go.

Just spoke to Mike, looks like he's scored another one. Real deal 4 speed Stage ragtop with all numbers (except carb) matching. "RS" code visible (the R was hiding behinnd the dipstick tube), correct distributor, 3.64 rear, original Southern car, etc, etc, etc. There are still some screamin' deals out there if you don't mind driving... Congratulations man!
