Do non GS 1968 Rivieras come with a posi? what were the options and gears?
When I peeled out today, there were 2 equal tire marks from the rear wheels, is it possible its a posi?

Yes Mike it's possible, as a posi rear end was an option, and could be ordered on any Riviera. :TU:
The GS Rivs came equipped with a 3.42 posi (PY), as that was part of the 'A9' GS option.
The other posi ratios that could be ordered on non GS Rivs were a 3.07 (PM), the most common, and economical,
and 3.91 (PZ), very rare, and used for stop light drag racing, and the occasional quick run to the beer store ! :eek2: :beer
A posi unit will have a metal tag on the cover of the differential, indicating posi traction lube only,
but it may have been removed, or is missing. :Do No:

Thanks for the info, So I will have to do some more investigating. Hopefully it is a posi.

If the tag is missing either perform more burnouts to confirm or jack the rear end off the ground, put trans in neutral then rotate one tire, if the other tire turns the same direction it is a limited slip (posi) if it turns the opposite direction it is a one legger

Do this but leave the transmission in park. Then if it's truly a healthy posi you'll be unable to turn the tires by hand from either side.

I dunno about dat. When mine was up on the rack last week getting her new skins put on I rotated the L rear and the R rear turned the opposite direction. I know I have posi. Rear has the tag and Ive done enough burnouts to prove it to myself

It may be a posi, but if you can do that by hand it's seriously tired.

POSI Something is wrong with that posi if one wheel is spinning in a opposite direction...lol. Try again. Crack that open to see...shoot some pics. :) Jim

As long as both rear wheels have equal traction, both will spin with an open differential. Usually there is something that prevents that like weight distribution, car not level, variation in the road surface between the tires, etc. If you peel out 4-5 times in different areas and still get dual marks you probably have a posi but it can be easily checked liked already mentioned.
The posi's also had a X with a circle around it stamped on the bottom of driver side axle tube. Hard or impossible to see if axle is rusted bad.

    Good point Jason -
. . . with that BBB 430 and very little weight in the Riv rear it's relatively easy to 'peel' both rear tires simultaneously w/o a posi ! :TU:
According to "the book", - searched high 'n low for those marks on my spare posi's, and could never see any traces of em.
Both units were quite rusty, and even after a thorough cleaning, those marks were not visible. :Do No:

Ive decorated the road in front of my house doing posi burns this way and that way doughnuts to the left and doughnuts to the right. I was trying to use up the stock tires so I could justify buying the new fattys on the back of the car. Anyway ya slice it ,Posi.Come to think of it my last Riv was like that too but made a loud clunk when turning a corner. I was thinking the clutch pacs in that one were shot. it was a much higher milage car than the 70K beauty Im sportn now. My rear end is pretty much rust free.Gonna look for the stamp mentioned above.

I crawled up under there with a piece of 220 sand paper and lightly sanded an area on the left side tube. was hard to see but there are several stamps. one I am pretty sure says" PM" another closer to the wheel says "A 09" theres another I cant make out. So based on the info above theres a conflict here. I really dont think I have the 3.07 gear. at 75 mph shes turning 3000 rpm.be on Where in any of my manuals or maybe on a body tag will it tell me for sure.

PM is a 3.07 posi Steve - p.40-84 in "the book". :TU:

I should have noted there is more than just the circle with and X on posi's. Seeing the PM is concrete evidence what you have assuming no one has changed it.
Thats better than seeing the circle with X because the PM designates the ratio and std or posi. Circle with X only designates a posi.
The A 09 is a date code. Typcally those are the only stamps I've seen.

FYI PY is the 3.42 posi. PS is a 3.91 posi which are rare as hens teeth.

Any idea of where else to look on the car for that info? I have a bone yard near here with 5 or 6 old Rivs in it and would like to see if any of them have the 3.42 or 3.91 gears.

A POP in the glove box on the console

    GS emblems on the fender

A posi tag on a rear cover bolt is worth something

    POP? = Piece of paper?
I am pretty sure none of them are GS.If I remember I only saw 1 car out there with GS bagdes and it wasnt one of the Rivs. I may have to wait untill fall to go back out there. The owner goes north to Maine for the summer. oldgoldcars.com

This was a booklet included with the Owners Manual, that identified the dealer, the vehicle data, the original new car owner, and the date the vehicle was put into service or sold.
The booklet contained all the information for recommended service/maintenance and warranty work on a new car. :TU:

(Axle Codes were only available starting with '68 P-O-Ps, not sure about subsequent years.):Do No:
