1967 Skylark with 340. Dipstick tube?

Is the 1967 Skylark 340 motor supposed to have a dipstick tube? My dipstick inserts right into the block, there is no dipstick tube pressed into the block though.

Also, what's the oil capacity when performing an oil and filter change?

There SHOULD be a tube that lightly presses into the block, then the dipstick slides into that.
Oil capacity is 4 quarts. 5 quarts with new filter.

No dipstick tube. The dipstick locks into the actual block. If you want, I can snap a picture for you tonight. Let me know.

Checked today in the sunlight. NO dipstick tube to be found.:( The dipstick itself says "Cap. 4 qts" and is numbered 1375251. I guess I'm going to have to find a tube to install or find some type of spacer to put on the dipstick so I can match the 'full' mark with the oil level after changing oil/filter and adding 5 qts of oil. Does that sound about right?

    EDIT:
Looks like I was busy typing when Andy's response was posted. So..... NO dipstick tube? Does that 5qts with filter change sound correct for the 67 Skylark 340 motor? If so I'll double check that the oil level hits the full mark when the car is level and after a oil/filter change with 5qts added. Is there supposed to be a gasket or o-ring seal or something on the dipstick? Andy, can you check the number on your dipstick to see if it matches mine?

Sorry for the questions but I'm learning my way with Buicks, and the car is an unknown quantity in some ways...... Not sure what may/may not have been messed with on this.

I do a little less than 5qts on mine, change the filter, an add a bottle or so of STP oil treatment (for the ZDDP, since I don't use an oil that has enough of that in it)

I think the dip-stick says 4 as back in the day you didn't change the filter with every oil change (pretty sure my 66's owners manual say something like every other oil change)

Love those 4-dr Hard tops too! :TU:

It probably depends on the dipstick tube. My 66 Skylark Convt with a 300-2 has no tube, stick goes into block. However, my 67 Skylark 2DrHt with a 340-4 does have a tube. I actually prefer the tube myself as I don't have to reach down as far and my hand isn't as close to a hot manifold. If one was available for the 300 (or if they are the same), I'd love to find a tube for my 66.

I usualy do 4 quarts, run engine for a min then add the last quart.
I need to find a new tube/stock combo for mine, as one day dipstick would only go in 1/3 of the way no matter what way I instered...quick fix was to cut dipstick and find out where it read when full...which ended up being the N of engine

Mine has the dipstick in the block, no tube. Just a little rubber washer to seal to the block. I'd rather have a tube and a better seal. Maybe Lokar makes something.

Can anyone verify if the part number 1375251 dipstick is the one that's to be used with no dipstick tube?

Are the little rubber seal pieces available anywhere? Mine has none.....

I've had many 300/340s, bought my first in 1970 and I just dump 5 quarts in. Power brake cars get a tube and non power brake cars don't. You could have a dipstick for a tube and your block doesn't have a tube. Change your oil, put 5 quarts with a new filter, run it, let it sit on level ground overnight and pull the stick. It should be slightly above full. If you run Mobil 1 you won't need any additives. Wallmart sells 5 qt jugs or Mobil 1 for $23. I use Bosch 3430 oil filters since they have the same specs (10 micron/w 98% flow efficiency) as a K&N for half the price.

Hmmmm. I've got a power brake car with no dipstick tube. :Do No:

I'll 3rd here and say I have PB with NO tube.

That seems strange they'd do that make two different versions. I wonder if it's like a mid-year change or something?

I agree. Strange though I've seen stranger stuff in the automotive world.

Well I'm making a decision on this one and moving on. The consensus would seem that with a filter change adding 5 quarts is correct. (Or one guy put in 4.5 plus some STP so I'll assume a total of 5qt fluids)

Sooo..... I did the filter change, added 5 quarts, ran the motor then let it sit. My dipstick at that point read slightly above the full mark. Since my little gasket seal for the dipstick was missing , I just did a quick measure, then cut a 1/2" long piece of fuel hose and added it to the dipstick. Now the oil level is even with the 'full' mark.

That's it for me. Unless someone can suggest a correct tube and stick to install as I'd really rather have a tube, especially if it was high enough above the sparkplug boots.

Must have been mid year. I had a 67 Skylark dr ht w/pb that had a tube and a GS340 w/no pb and no tube. I'll pay closer attention at the next show.

Reviving an OLD thread... I picked up a vehicle with a 67 340.

Just changed the oil (5 quarts total) and it's reading REALLY high on the dipstick - way too full according to the marks... BUT - I'm now curious if the dipstick is even original.

If anyone running this engine has the time to measure their dipstick (tip to seal?) any chance you could tell me what you've got?

Thinking I may do the 1/2" long fuel hose trick - it's impossible to get the stick in and out between my plugs.

I have a 67 vert with the 340-2bbl and power drum brakes.
    Dipstick has NO tube.
Part number on dipstick is 1368546.
Oddly, it also says CAP-4 QTS
I added a small grommet on it from Ace Hardware to try to seal it better to the block.
It's 14 3/4" inches from the tip to where it looks like there is supposed to be some sort of sealing ring (where I added the grommet).

Mind you, I am definitely not a Buick expert. In fact, I'm getting this car ready for sale.

Worth noting, I changed the oil filter at the same time and had assumed from what I'd read that meant you needed an extra quart beyond the 4.... but now I'm thinking not...

    Double checking my dipstick tomorrow.

FWIW I went out and measured my dipstick. 15" from tip to metal grommet. 14.5" from tip to my home made fuel hose spacer. This ends up making the oil match the full mark when I put in 5 quarts with a fresh filter change. I have number 1375251 dipstick.

I got a dipstick from the auto parts store and added a tube.
