Need a 1967 GS 400 Shifter Rod? I recently found a group of parts the can be easily put together to reproduce an original.

Here is the original shifter rod (top) along with my replicated one (bottom). I bought three items for this, plus a simple weld and some bending and here it is.

    Here are the parts:

I ordered this part on ebay and it does not come with the 5/16" bolt or wave spring washer (easy to find though). It’s almost an exact part. Original was hollow on the big end and the new one is solid. Measures the same and fits perfect in the transmission lever and on the 3/8 steel rod.

The connector/linkage that goes into the shifter assembly. This was a Dorman part I found and ordered from Amazon:

This is the same 3/8" diameter as the original. Also, the original had a small metal sleeve that fits on the rod linkage and inside the original rubber grommet on the shifter assembly and is held in place with a pin. The metal sleeve did fit perfectly on the new Dorman piece however; the new piece comes with two rubber grommets (one extra). These new grommets actually fit perfectly in the shifter assembly where the original rubber grommet was, and it actually locks the rod in place. I may try this first before trying to find a sleeve and drilling a hole for a pin.

And finally, 3/8" Steel Round Rod I bought from Home Depot:

    https://www.homedepot.com/p/3-8-in-x-36-in-Plain-Steel-Round-Rod-802447/204273959

This was welded to the Dorman piece after I cut off the stamped end and throwing out the locking part that came with.

Hopefully this can help out someone trying to recreate on of these. It was definitely easy having an original to copy!

Great info. I made a rod for a ‘67 using two other random rods welded together and with a couple added bends a few years ago. I also had my shop at work burn out some brackets that connect the rod to the transmission. I made ones that are the ‘67 size and the smaller ‘65-‘66 size.

Nice write-up and getting it fabricated so soon! Last time we were up in mid-September, you just had the parts.
