1966 Wildcat emblems

I'm confused about the emblems on the rear of 1966 Wildcats. It seems that the proper emblems are the block letters spelling out 'WILDCAT' on the trunk lid and on the rear fenders. Let's call that #1:

    1. Block 'WILDCAT' on fenders and on trunk lid.

But I have also seen these three other combinations, making a total of fout:

    2. Script (from 1965) on fenders and block 'WILDCAT' on the trunk
    3. Block 'WILDCAT' on the fenders and block 'BUICK' on the trunk
    4. Script on the fenders and block 'WILDCAT' on the trunk

Interestingly, I've never seen both script on feers and trunk on a 1966, which is how they are on all 1965s.

Some explain the different trunk emblems with..... 'oh, the trunk has been replaced....' . But the 1965 and 1966 are the only two years of this body style, and the trunks are different and are not interchangeable. They look the same, but the rear lower edge is flat on the 1965 trunk, but it is shaped on the 1966, so that isn't possible.

How can one know the proper configuration?

I own a 66 Wildcat and have the "script" Wildcat letters like a 65 has. My car was an early production Cat built in I believe, Delaware. I was told the "block" letters were supposed to be correct for the year but I'm told they had production/supply problems with them so some of the early cars got holdover "script" Wildcat badges. I never saw a mix of block and script on the same car, myself. Maybe Topcat can tell you, he is the guru on them.

Mine is a Sept. 1965 build out of the Kansas City plant, and it has script on the fenders and trunk also.

I have some of these cars. The changeover from script to block on the '66 cars happened around Christmas or end of year 1965. All I've had or seen have the same emblems on trunk and fenders. I have a '65 script sitting next to a '66 script and they are slightly different-you'd probably only notice when comparing=likely a different vendor.

  6. My Dad bought a 66 Wildcat in 1970 , it had block letters on the trunk and quarters. I still have a black dash pad that has been the basement for ages ,if you are looking for one that is still soft , let me know.

The trunk lid with "Buick" block letters probably came from a Le sabre.
