I am lining up the "winter project" for my 1966 Skylark GS. It's going to be a full, complete detailing of the engine compartment. I've purchased paint from Bill Hirsch, Buick Red, Late 1966-1971. My question is about what does and what does not get painted red. Currently, the front AC compressor bracket and the front and rear PS pump brackets are painted red. Is this correct? Some folks are telling me that GM painted all brackets flat black. I'd really like to get this right the first time. Thanks!

Test that Bill Hirsch paint before you go too far....I found it to be too purple for my taste.
Power steering brackets should be red, the brace is black.
Not sure about the AC bracket (no AC cars here!), but I believe it's black.

I've seen a number of incorrectly painted brackets on the mid 60s nailheads. I admit it is a little odd. Apparently the brackets were bolted to the engine at the factory when it was painted which wasn't the norm.

The front bracket for the A/C compressor on a 66 Riv which also holds the alternator is red. I am not 100% sure if the Skylark is the same but if I had to guess, I think it probably is but someone elese should verify that. I'm not a Skylark guy by any stretch.

The rear bracket for the A/C compressor is black.

I am not a fan of the Bill Hirsch paints either. I know they've been around a long time and many people use them religiously so I guess it personal preference. Follow Walts advice and test it to be sure you are happy before going too far.

Here is a pic I just found on ebay of a 66 Skylark engine with A/C

Anything that was held down with the head bolts is usually engine color. At the factory they would NOT remove torqued bolts to install a bracket. Accessory bolts are another story.

Return that Bill Hirsch paint while you can before you open it.

I have a qt on a shelf that I am stuck with.

Plus, they NEVER returned a phone call nor multiple emails about the color problem.

Too Bad POR 15 doesn't have a Buick red.

Went out to the shop and took my A/C and Altenator out the trunk. It appears the front one is painted red and the rear on is black as someone already stated. See if the member THEGSX can get you some pictures. He the ultimate expert on GS's.

    Very NICE !!!

I see an SJ Grand Prix. ('69? or 70?)
Dad had a '69 J Grand Prix. He said it was the fastest car he drove in his life.

If Jim Shiels says it about the GS, you can take it to the bank! Also Tom T's comment about the factory not removing torqued bolts to install a bracket is good common sense. I wish I had some!
