Hey guys, what are the differences between a MS Code 401 and all the other 401's in 1966? The other codes are MR, MU, MT, AND MY. I know the MY was an export motor with a lower compression, and I believe the MS had 11 to 1 compression, but are there any other differences like cam, intake, carb, etc. What was the horsepower rating? Thanks

    Did you find one???
The MS code 401 had the 11:1 pistons, q-jet carb, and 2x4 spec distributor. Cam should be different than the stock production 401 cam, but I don't have details on the specs yet.
Buick did not specify hp, but the NHRA rated it at 332 hp.
The MU code 401 was the same engine with 10.25:1 CR. The Buick sales team advertised it at 340 hp.

I know this thread is about the 401, but what about an 1966 MZ code 425?

The MZ code 425 had the 2x4 option. 360 hp. 2x4's weren't avail at the start of 1966 production, but became available several months later.

So what is the story on that MS code 401? Do you have one??:Brow:

Where can I find out what code I have on my 401? Is it printed somewhere on the engine? or maybe in the VIN number?

I marked the place with white arrow, its 425 but i guess 401 will be similiar.

thanks a lot! Can I just pop the hood and see it or do I need to disassemble it like you have?
