Several years ago I completed a frame-off restoration on my 1966 Buick Skylark GS. THe restoration work was completed before the days of Painless Wiring harnesses. I was relegated to using the stock harness which is still in pretty good shape. Upon the maiden voyage of the car about 5 years ago I cooked (exploded) the battery. The stock system had this funky externally mounted voltage regulator on the firewall that I presumed was no longer regulating the voltage to the battery. After completely tearing the front-end off the car and rerestoring the the frame and body paint work form the acid spill, I decided to ditch the externally regulated alternator and replace with an internally regulated version. I also removed the stock voltage regulator from the wiring harness. This was at the advice of one of my local wiring shops. I also installed a GEL type battery to stop the acid explosion. Everything seemed to work ok but I never really put any miles on the car. So yesterday I took her for a spin and when i stopped the car the battery was whining and so hot you could not touch the thing (Good thing is was the GEL type or I would have probably grenaded it). After the conversion it appears as though I still have the same issue as before. So the questions is what else could be going on here? How would I check it out? and what would be some possible fixes? Any help you might offer would be greatly appreciated!! Sincerely, Paul (Jody) Plummer
