After learning a lot of information with comments here on V8 that this MAY be a GS I am Trying to get a hold of old friend who sold me the car and more info. or history on the car-when I picked up the car he was certain it was a GS but when I seen the small block I told him NO it was not. When I picked up car he said he had some other parts for it and he is trying to find the title. I am almost completed with a 67 GS conv. I am doing frame off on and it was in ROUGHER condition than this 65 -if my 67 was only Skylark I would have NEVER did the EXTREME restoration. Each day I am finding more things that point toward it being a gs- like yesterday I found the GRAND SPORT emblems in the car and the trunk script matched up to the holes in the rusty original trunk lid.So til I get more history about the car and check the rear end ,maybe check the frame for #s at back end by trunk. I am gonna put the selling of this car on HOLD to make sure it is not a GRAND SPORT :Dou: I dont mind parting out a rough SKYLARK but a G.S. and conv. at that is another story. SORRY if I caused anyone disapointment - Mike L.

    Mike,

No problem with not selling the car with me at this time. I'm in line please let me know if you do decide to.

I'm thinking it's not a true GS if the option tag points is was a 300 CI. That wouldn't make any sense. Watch how much info you look for on this..................it may come back that this car was being looked for for a long time.

I guess if the title was found you could see if it matched the vin but the option code tag would be in question.

Does it look like the rivets on the vin tag or option code tag were ever tampered with as like if some body rebodied it?

Hey Brian it is a true console shift tilt(no column shift) Also KCOMBS post he has a 401 BBB and ST 300 tranny in his garage for 65 GS-I dont know 65s what tranny would go in a 65 gs???? Mike

Mike the ST 300 would be accurate for the GS if it was an auto trans.

Sorry I was referring to the 300 engine not the trans.

I think there were a couple of options for transmissions.

On the cowl tag I posted it shows Group 2X=ST 300 autm. tranny is that exclusive to GS or did small block 300s also have ST 300s also or just 2-spd. powerglides?????

The smaller engines have a different bell housing than the 401-425 require.
If you keep the car there are plenty of upgrades you can look into and go from the 2spd to a 3 or 4 spd with overdrive if you wanted.
Let us know what you decide to do and I am sure we can help you along the way:TU:

1965 Skylarks and Specials with 300 Ci and also 6 cylinders cars also had those transmissions.

That won't be an indicator of a GS.

Sounds like the option tag shows a 300 transmission, not motor - still could be real.

Flint 67 GS: I have an original 65 Gran Sport convertible with a 401 ci nailhead with a factory T-10 4 speed that I've owned since it was a year old and it's still drivable. I ordered a Whirley Jig today to begin a frame-off restoration You have all of the authentic markings for a GS for 65. The real teller for me are the trunk emblem where the twist tabs usually break off when you remove them and the tag on the glove box. You see the trunk emblem back side in 102_3755.jpg. If these tab slits match slits in your trunk lid, it's at least a genuine GS trunk lid. Were these emblems still attached when you got the car? Though the GS emblems on the rear fenders may be on there, are they below the horizontal running bend line? Then, look inside the rear fenders for three holes filled above the bend line. That would be evidence of someone removing the Skylark script emblem and adding GS markings. The largest emblem is for the grille.

I don't know what it is yet, but I've read that all GSs were mounted on convertible frames and have a GS designation on the frame. I've never paid much attention to that because I've never had any doubt that mine is real.

Did you decide to keep it and restore it? If you haven't yet decided, work on decoding completely the VIN tag and the options tag on the firewall. Someone may have changed out a larger engine for what you have now. That option tag has a lot of googaws on it for having a small engine. It doesn't make sense. And after doing that, look up the stats on how many were produce with your configuration. For mine, it was just short of 600. Dean Byers in Roseburg, Oregon 407 718-8377 cell
