The best way is to check a couple of things:
    1) Is the engine code LX?
    2) Does the Engine Serial Number match the car's VIN?
    3) Do the carbs and the distributor have the correct numbers? (tag on distributor, stamped numbers on carb)
    4) Is the transmission coded BS?
    5) Is the rear end a 3.42 posi?
    6) Is the exhaust (if still stock) 2-1/4" pipe with gentler bends?

#'s 1 & 2 are your big clues; everything else can be swapped out.

You have to realize that the Gran Sport is not a model, it's an option. As with any option(s), it (they) can be added to a base car. There is nothing in the VIN that will identify the car as a Gran Sport. All 1965 Rivieras are one model, some are just optioned better than others. A highly desireable option is the Gran Sport (Option code A9)

Ribbed rocker covers came standard with the custom interior, and were an available option on standard interior cars so they're not useful as an identifier. Gran Sports came with a specialty wheel cover, but a lot of buyers opted for the new Formula Five Rally wheels. Do a study of the placement / size of the Gran Sport emblems. There was a change in the emblems. Make sure the size and placement corresponds with the build date.
