1965 Riv rear gears, where to find 3.08/3.42

Discussion in 'Got gears?' started by 65mildcustomRIV, Feb 1, 2006.

  1. HI, Just wanted to see if anyone can guide me. I have a 1965 Rivi, not sure of the rear gears, I know it has posi though. I wanted to get a little more zip off the line. I know they don't reproduce the gears, but if someone can tell me what other cars I would be able to find either 3.08 or 3.42's. Do Skylarks have those gears. I live in Arizona and there's a nice salvage yard that has many 60's-70's Buicks. SO If I knew what car to look for I could maybe find the gears...thanks for the help and advice...

61-64 Full sized and 63-65 Riviera share those gears, otherwise you are out of luck. Posi's usually came in 3.23 or 3.42 cars so I'd check yours before you start making any purchases. Best way I can think of getting your ratio without opening the rear is to paint a mark on the pinion yoke and pull the wheels and have someone spin a axle and count how many times the pinion yoke turns. If you want to be absolutely sure you will have to pull the axles and drop the 3rd member and count the teeth.
Rancho Riviera in California, Wheatbelt Antique Auto in Oklahoma and a guy in Addison, TX are the best places to look as they specialize in Buicks.

    Hope this helps you,
