This is a rearend out of a 64 four door car that I took apart and I have a bunch of parts that need to find a new home and this one of them. I have been told that this is a posi unit with 3.42 gears, the wheels pictured do not come with the rearend. Any questions feel free to let me know. I'm a little green with some of the wildcat stuff so keep that in mind. $220 or your best offer. Forgot to add, im in Lincoln, NE

I am interested if it is a posi with 3:42 gears.

If it is a posi it will have an aluminium tag on the filler plug stating to use posi lube only. The ratio will be stamped on the bottom of the pumpkin.

BTW, I would only want the centre section.

    Thanks,
    Larry

I am also interested if it is a Posi. The gear ratio doesn't matter too much as long as it is between 3.07 and 3.42. Would you consider shipping just the center section to save on shipping costs?

Checked out the rearend...and there no tag on the plug and I could not find a number stamped on the housing.

Found some number but unfortunately not what I was told by the previous owner...i found a 30 so I'm thinking 3.07 and no posi tag so I guess its 3.07 open...:(

Well, it is almost 50 years old so the tag may have gone missing over the years.

When you have both wheels of the ground and you turn one of them the other will turn the same direction if it's posi and the opposite direction if it's open.

Not a posi...I half way tried to find the numbers on the housing, i found a 3 and 0 so I assume its a 3.07. then above that i found a 172?

Yes, it is a 3:07. The other three numbers are the production date. 172 would be that it was made on the 172nd day of the year (according to my interpretation of the manual)

I am still surprised that they put this info on the housing and not the diff itself. The diff can be changed out easily.

A Posi has a 3/4" square plug that you use an open end wrench on to remove the filler plug. Non-Posi uses a 3/8ths. square as in racket or extension to remove the filler plug. An easy way to tell Posi from Non-Posi by just looking at the fill/check fluid level plug. This is for Full Size cars only up till about '65-'66 that came with Posi from the factory & removal carrier/center sections.
