Actually I have the one still on the car which is from the generator setup and then I bought the later brackets for an alternator from a guy on this list. The trouble is that these brackets are attached to the cylinder head using 2 head bolts. If I can simply remove the bolts and the old generator bracket and then put the later alternator bracket on with the head bolts re-torqued, I don't see a problem. I just don't know if these bolts can safely be removed and replaced without the possibility of damaging (warping) the cylinder head.
A couple more pics. Do you really need to remove the lower bracket? But if you do that should not be a problem, maybe drain the cooling fluid to be on the safe side.
You CAN remove those two bolts without harming anything. They don't go into water so no sealer/sealant is required. Just use a 1/4" longer bolt where the bracket attaches to the front motor mount.
Okay, now I can see yours uses the original generator bracket. There was some question as to how well this would line up with an alternator but if yours works okay then I don't see a big problem with it. Thanks for your help.
Are you saying you can remove the 2 head bolts which hold the original generator mount and then replace it with the alternator mount and this will not affect the cylinder head? That would be the easiest way as I have the alternator mount from a later model 401. The article I read said that a new brace would have to be made because of the size difference between the my 364 and the 401 brackets. I was just worried that removing the 2 head bolts might cause head warpage.
No problem. Mine has work well for the 10 years I have owned it. I have heard that there are modern alternators that look as the old generators. A friend has one in his 1933 Chevrolet Coupe and looks great. I would like to have one for my car since I am doing a full restortion. Please put up pics as you move along with your car.....
Yes those are available, but quite expensive. http://www.powermastermotorsports.com/powergen.html I will be posting more pics when I have some work complete. Today I removed the carb for rebuilding over the winter months and completely covered the car as it is sitting in my yard, no garage.
Thanks, I assume then just re-torque to spec same as the other head bolts? Sorry to be such a bother, but I don't want to rebuild anything on the motor just yet. This list has been great to help me on my way!
