Im trying to sell this 322. I've ran it on the ground a few times and it would run decent but it would kinda want to take off and increase throttle without me even touching the throttle. So I totally took the carb all the way apart and completely cleaned it. All the linkages and parts seem to function fine except for the metering rods. Im not understanding how it works because they're always up so whats the purpose of that arm the swings only in the function that wants to push them up. So I put the carb back on and now it really wants to rev till it hits the moon. I friend of mine told me its gotta be a vacuum leak. I don't know, im jus talking too much now. But any insight is much apperciated.

does sound like a vacume leak.... check under the carb base by squirting some atf around the edge of the base , if the leak is there it will suck it in and make a change in the rpm and some smoke out the exhaust....

    Dirk,
The metering rods should lightly bottom with throttle resting at base idle and choke not closed. They are held open somewhat by the spring of the power valve piston when engine is not running(no vacuum). There is an adjustment screw that clamps the lever. The metering rods are cam actuated to open in sync with the throttle for proper air/fuel mixture when off idle. A 55 shop manual should have detailed instructions. If the rods are being held off seat significantly, it may cause problems. If the idle is set properly, it should be running off the idle circuits. Your idle mixture screws may be mis-adjusted also. You need a book.

BTW, is it a 2bbl or 4 and which model carburetor?
