Have a 1965 Skylark Gran Sport with 14" wheels . Currently have
195 70 R 14's on the car . Now the questions : What would be
recommended if I stay with the 14's for front and rear tires . Am
looking to go at least one size larger in the front and the tallest ,
widest tire for the rear . Or am I better off going to 15" wheels then what size for the front and how big can I go in the rear ?

    Thank you ,
    George

    Tires on a 64 Skylark

    George,

I put disc brakes on the front of my 64 Skylark and had to get new wheels to fit over the discs. I went with 15" after posting a thread here and listening to the advice given. You will have more sizes to pick from in 15" and it didn't change my speedo much. I put 225/60R15 on the front and 255/60R15 on the rear and they fit fine with no rubbing. I think you could go a size or two bigger, but these fill the wheel well and look good in my opinion.

The wheels I bought are 15 x 7 Cragar SS mags. The OEM Buick mags are available also.

    Hope this helps,
    Karl

    Karl,
Do you think a 275 wide tire will fit in the rear? How much room do you have beteen the fender lip and the tire, and the tire and the wheelwell?
    Thanks!

    Rear wheel spacing

    Phil.

On the rear, the wheels are 255 x 60. The 60 wide is about the max as there is only .5" between the inside of the fender lip and the outside of the tire. Around the perimiter of the tire, the closest it is to the inside of the wheel well is 5" at the front.

If you can find the thread where I ask about 14" wheels and disc brakes in this section, there was a reply with the max you can use.

    Good luck,
    Karl

karl, I understand what you said, but it seems you may have tire sizing a bit backwards.
255/60-15 = 255mm tire width(sidewall to sidewall), 60 is the aspect ratio(basically the sidewall is 60% of the width, and ofcourse 15 is the rim diameter. If you want to figure out how tall a tire is use this formula(I will use your tire as an example)
255 divided by 25.5(convets millimeters to inches)= 10" wide tire
    10 x .60 = 6" sidewall x 2(you have a top and bottom sidewall right..LOL) = 12" + 15" diameter wheel = 27" tall tire.

    Thanks Karl!
