:ball: My 401 only has about 120lbs of compression while cranking..........she also likes to use the oil (can go through a quart in 100 miles if i'm driving with a heavy foot) but doesn't seem to smoke too bad, a little out the breather though. What would you guys recommend for a rebuild kit, any good suppliers? I am also on a pretty tight budget so i had thought of going the hone it and re-ring it rought for now....i know, it's not the right way, but at least it would use so much oil, and i can do a complete rebuild or 455 swap later down the road.:TU:

Yeah...I have a bit of blow by.....i think it is alot more than there should be. I wish gasket sets for a nailhead were the price of gasket sets for a Small Block Ch*vy......i would like to know if i could just get away with re-ringing it for now.:Do No:

Wait a second...did you have the throttle wide open for the compression test? If not, the test will show lower pressures.

Hmm...that is a good question, not sure on that one, maybe i will recheck it today with the throttle open. Even though i am quite sure that the rings are toast, by the amount of blow by and the amount of oil consumption. :Do No:

OK, the reason for the wide open throttle for compression check is that with the carb closed, not enough air can be drawn into the combustion chambers to give an accurate reading.

Tocheck for bad rings, squirt a few drops of engine oil into the chamber, then check the compression again. Not a large change, rings OK, large change, rings are toast.

You also might try to find someone near you that can do a leakdown test, this will give you a better idea as to cylinder sealing and where the leakage is occuring, and how much.

Ok, i checked the compression with throttle open, still only 120-135ish.......i didn't have any clean oil handy, i might try again today with oil, also if i put air pressure to the cylinder, can't you hear where it is leaking...via listening to where the air is coming from (carb, exaust, breather)?

Basically, air pressure in the cylinder is a leakdown test, BUT it has to be done with a guage setup and a constant preessure, and that is what a leakdown tester does.

Yes, it does dial in just where the leak is, and how much, good test to do.

Still at 120 range, I'd say you dialed the problem in, but the other checks will just go to confirm it.

I put air pressure to the cylinder, nothing fancy, just pressure and quite a good amount of air comes out of the valve cover.....i'm real sure the rings are gonzo..:ball:
