I put new bearings and seals in a 66 chevy 12 bolt and carquest gave me the wrong pinion bearing. It was listed to be correct and when I went back with the old one they said that it the bearing for the 70-72 12 bolts? The date code on the housing is J 12 5 which I thought is Oct 12th 65. The housing is 54 1/2 wide backing plate to plate?

Any thoughts? Do you think their book was wrong?

Elcaminos had a different seal, maybe(?) a different bearing also. I had to get a seal from a truck 12-bolt for Mandys car.......

El Caminos, Chevelles and Monte Carlos had the same passenger car 12 bolt. It's quite possible they looked up the part # for a later model 12 bolt truck rear. They have a diff. size pinion bearing.

I know on the 71's that the pinion seal is different on the El Caminos than the passenger cars, I've ran into this twice, I thought maybe the bearing is also..... Try the truck part number and see what happens.

All 12 bolt rears for cars have the same size bearings. GM did not farm out the 12 bolts like they did for all the other rears.

I also have found out there are two different pinion seal sizes.Unfortunately I can't tell you which one fits which rear.I know that the Richmond installation kit for a 12 bolt contained the wrong seal.

On the pinion seal... You might be using a 8.5 yoke they will fit the 12 bolt pinion also 30 spline. see if that is where your problems are. 8.5 yokes require a larger inside diameter rubber seal .
