12 bolt Chevy ??

    69GS400s ...my own amusement ride!

    is this one of the "good" 12 bolt chevy rears ?? I found it under a Canadian built 69 Skylark Custom 350-4

    looks like there is plenty of canadien crust on there too. If I didnt know better I'd say that was a buffalo car..:idea2:

    I lived in Buffalo for 6 years and this one would qualify as such, but, no ... its been a Long Island car all of its life. Last registered in 1990

    OK then - Onto "How to Rip a 12-bolt out without having a rainstorm of rust cover you ...:"

    Any Ideas ?? Im not beyond SawZalling holes right through the floor to gain access to the upper/lower control arms...

    ...seriously !! The bolts are so rusty and the underside so crusty that A) I dont think the bolts would come off anyway B) the ensuing MONSOON of rust raining down while underneth and trying to impact gun / Sawzall from the underside would be hazzardous to my health.

    The problem with going through the floor is frame has that big crossmember there that is going to block most of your access you could go through the trunk, but then there is the gas tank.

    I would sawzall the control arms. The rear isn't going to just slam down since the shocks will still be on, and the drive shaft will be there. start with the lowers through the wheel wells. then tighten the shock bolts until they snapped. easier than trying to mess with them. I'm thinking then maybe the rear will swing down and hang from the uppers and you might be able to reach under with a sawzall to finsh the job. leave the driveshaft on and pull the whole thing out. once its out from the car, then pull driveshaft.

    One thing is for sure, the control arm bolts are going to be siezed to the inner sleeve in the bushing. It would take alot of torching, pentetrating and swearing to get them out. been there done that. getting the nuts off will be easy.

    you need to find a fool like me who would do it for 50 bucks and a case of cold ones.

    Here's a question I have not seen answered. Even googled it to no avail..

    What is the normal operating oil temperature of a rear end? Be it a 12 bolt or 10.

    Alan got the 12 bolt out yesterday. I helped a little, but only so much since I did not have disposable clothing with me.

    Actually - it was the 12 year old behind the wheel :moonu: :beers2: who did most of the work getting the 12-bolt out ... and a neighbor who I dont really know who saw a wrench-fest in progress and had to jump in.

    ...Larry (AKA "The Wizard" or The Hammer) is showing us his best side....:bla:
