I want to put a posi in my 71 GS,it has the 8.5 one legger in it now.I had a 3:08 8.2 for it,but sold it after your helpful insight and suggestions.
So would this be a good route to go or do I just find a posi carrier and gears to have installed.I'm thinking 3:08,3:23,or 3:42.
Running a worked 350,TH350 shift kit and converter, planning a mildly worked455 in the near future with the same tranny.Thanks.

Tom, I would stick with the 8.5 you have and get a nice posi for it.

I kept my 8.5 and put moser heavy duty axles in, added a powertrax locker, ARP studs and TA cover. Did it all myself except for installing the new 3.42 gear.

    GStage1 Always looking for parts!

    Stick with the 8.5"

Same center section in GM cars and some trucks from 71-89.

The 12 bolt pictured in the Ebay auction is from 68-70 Cutlass models and they are extremely expensive to rebuild and parts are almost impossible to find.

The 8.5" can easily handle 500-550 hp.
