I'm confused. I have what I believe to be a '71 8.5 10 bolt rear end. It has the correct code for a 3.08 stamped on the pass. tube and the ring has 40 teeth, the pinion has 13. The rear cover has the "scallops" on each side in line with the axle tubes. The axles are 28 spline, bolt in, not c-clip. Can I use any new posi carrier for a '71 up 10 bolt, & what recomendations would you have for a 4 speed car. Truetrac?, Clutch type?

yES 1971- 1987 posi units will fit your Buick 8.5 rear.

AS far as which posi to use... Will you be drag racing or rallying or cruising etc.

I would say if your going to drag race alot use the Eaton clutch type unit
if you want more curves and turn and driving type of posi go with the true trac helical worm gear posi unit.

If you would like some price shoot me a pm I will quote you out some prices. Jim

Thanks Jim, I am mostly just cruising & enjoying the car, but it's embarrasing to just leave one really long black mark. I've never had anything worth putting on a drag strip before, but I probably will try it now just for fun. Scott

Scott, BELIEVE me you will not be the slowest car there...lol. You have to go to the track...You must also get some slicks...even if you have to borrow a set. Then you can get a feel of what the car was ment to do. :3gears:

Either of the units are good. they will both do the job very well.

Good luck on your choice and if you need a 1st 2nd or 3rd price quote let me know...lol. Jim

Jim, thanks for the advice, I ended up with the eaton type, got it set up & back under the car yesterday. I broke the M20 leaving a car show three weeks ago. Ordered a new trans with the super case, and new correct shifter bracket. The new bracket moved the shifter a little so I had to bend the shifter rods a little, must have bent it a little to far & broke it. Found an original set & while I was waiting on them I figured I might as well pull the rear out & install the posi. I figured it was easier than doing it under the car. I'm going to carry the shift rods to the plater tomorrow, so I hope to have it back together in time to go to Bowling Green. About the drag racing, the car is a convertible so I'm kinda worried about body flex if I ran slicks. I'm anxious to see how the posi works 'cause it sure didn't hook up before! Scott
