I think Marco knows the owner, don't you Marco? I think the seller (John B.) is the same gentleman I talked to before who had the Brown 70 GS convertible and red GS convertible on consignment at Volo recently.
Handfull Why was I thinking there were 3 of these produced? Anyway, this is a nice example and well known. It should bring in a hefty sum even with the relatively poor photos.
Anyone care to guess on a final price?? I'm going with mid to high 40's....why do I have a feeling I'm going to be WAY off???
I know John quite well, he is a terrific guy. I appraised his last Stage 1 4-speed conv that he used to show at the Nats. Lets just sum up the price story by saying that his last car sold in the $60k range and this will be significantly higher for reserve. He raced this car at the Nats 2 years ago and blew the fan belt at the end of the track - lucky to have no damage. This car has lots of small issues and oddball changes but is a real nice machine. As for the only Stage 1 3-speed conv car ever built, well lets just say I have it a from a very reputable source where another is right now.
1 of ! I was wondering on that 3 speed stage 1 conv. was the air bags an option in 70? What about the overflow tank I thought on 70 the lid was clear and obviously the headers are a performance upgrade. The car looks sweet dont get me wrong but just my 2 cents and double check for build sheet matching options:TU:. Steve :Smarty:
nice looking stage 1 conv. being a rare 3 speed doesnt mean that much to me. id still rather have my 1 of 400 GSX.
Back in the day, nobody I knew actually wanted a 3 speed car if they had their druthers, although with a big Buick torque motor a 3 speed is more practical (less probability of missed power shifts, ha). A good friend of mine in 1969 had a 68 Goat 3 speed and it was a hell of a fun car to street race. But the question is, should someone pay $30,000 extra because this car has a 3 speed instead of a 4 speed? You've got to be joking.........
Being the Standard Transmission, the order was either a mistake, or someone wanted to go to complete Basics. Rare, YES, Popular NO. I haven't seen the car 1:1 so I can't voice "Opinion on $" but value will be based on Market & how BAD someone wants it. You can ask ANYTHING. Pacers are Rare today, SO WHAT? 1 item shouldn't increase the price of a vehicle so drastically, unless you are looking at the extremes, DOCUMENTED Z-16/ZL-1, COPO, etc. I know of someone who put $50K in a PINTO, 2 thuds were heard when the Insurance Agent called the underwriter to cover the car for that amount. 1st was phone hitting the floor, 2nd was the underwriter Laughing he behind off.
First,I am surprised that John is selling this car after the article he wrote in the GSXtra a while back about how important the car was to him and his father in law. First, rarity does not equally correspond to desirability. As previously stated, the HD 3speed was standard on a bigblock GS and the original owner was upset about it.Yes this car is odd,but is it more desirable than a 4 speed car ...no. It is unique, but not a more desirable stage 1 conv because of it's base trans.
i agree with what you said rich. i just dont know why the convertibles bring so much more money than the hard tops. maybe im in the minority, but when i look to buy a 70-72 gs i want a hard top, no vinyl roof, instead of a convertible. i know the convertibles are rarer, but more desirable? not for me.
With well over 7 days left... It's at $65,300... I don't know, are we looking at a 6 figure Gran Sport???? :Brow:
whoa Nelly......:jd: 80 large and climbing:jd: where will it end...........:3gears: its in our neck of the woods toouzzled: D.
Re: Anyone care to guess on a final price?? Let me just go ahead and RETRACT my earlier statement...
