I want to change my rear gear so that I trip the lights a 6000 rpm. I know there are a couple of math wizards on here so this is what I know.

    Current setup

    464 CI engine
    Turbo 400
    3000 stall converter
    3:89 Moser 9" spool
    29 x 10 Hoosiers

    Current 1/8 mile performance

    1.59 60'
    4.56 330'
    7.08 1/8
    97.26 MPH

Currently I trip the lights a 5200 rpm. I'm thinking maybe 4.30 or 4.56 but not really sure.

Well, figuring 100 mph with 29" tall tire, you need a 5:17 gear according to a couple of calculators I use.

We run a 4:10 gear in the race car, and are going to go back to a 3:42 soon.

My guess is, you would not have any performance increase by making a gear change.

Your converter slip % will figure into it a little.I had my 8" converter tightened up( was about 18%) when I upgraded my heads. Your 3000 will have way less slip than that but still a small factor.
My next move will be upgrading to a 9.5" with a much lower slip % but I'll need a trans brake to make it all work together.I would also like to run a 430 gear over the 411 to really hammer the 60'.These plans will need $ so who knows when I'll do it.
I went 10.88 @119 mph crossing the line @6600rpm 4500/5000 stall 30x9 radial slick 411 gear.I know your running 1/8 if I geared my car for the 1/8 456 would be my choice and tweak my converter to the rpm I'd want.

I assume you are using all 3 gears in the 1/8? Just a thought here but here's my experience: When I had 3.73 gears I was only using 1st and 2nd gear in the 1/8 and going through the traps a few hundred rpm higher than I was making power, but shifting into 3rd always resulted in a slower time so I switched to 4.10's. With them I was now using 3 gears but going through the traps about 1,000 rpm lower than peak. But here's the rub....my times didn't change one single bit. Same 60ft, same ET, same mph, the only difference is an extra shift. Maybe you should consider a lower numerical gear and drop one shift :Do No:

Bill, I never thought about it like that.:TU: Yes I am using all 3 gears but your approach would be a real nice deal for those times I get to run on the 1/4 mile track. Maybe a switch to something in a 3:40 or a 3:50 and only use 1st and 2nd in the 1/8.
