One of my buddies had a Dixie Chopper. That thing was fast but was wondering how dependable they are since we have a lot of knowledgable tractor gents on here
You were right Fred “the company was sold sometime in 2014 until closed in 2018 and sold again in the fall of 2019. I find it important that the original DC was about the best you could buy short of a Ferris. “
If I could afford both I would have a zero turn mower and a JD Garden tractor. I will not store this type of equipment outside, and at present I do not have inside storage for both. I would have to build a shed, and here in Sunny SW Florida one must consider the possibility of rather high winds. Such a shed would be expensive; I'm more interested in building a garage for my toys and it will not be a storage facility for yard equipment.
For the money a new 140 costs I’d buy a used 335/345 with a Kawasaki Motor & power steering. I have a 1999 445 fuel injected Kawasaki, power steering & hydraulics, it only has 690 hours with plenty of life left. Buying a clean used tractor is worth it if you can go up a size or two, just check maintenance records.
Doesn't look like much. But this thing is a (bad assed little dude) . Made in China in the mid 80s. I have weights for the front, weights for the rear, and believe me.. I have asked more or this little dude than was ever expected and it doesn't care one bit.
Nice. You've probably gotten more miles on that and spent less on parts than us mid-80's GN owners...
I received the new carburetor from Briggs & Stratton yesterday and installed it this morning. The L-120 is now back to running the way it should, and (at least as far as garden tractors go) all is well with the world. I didn't love the $175 pricetag, but I couldn't have replaced the JD for 10 times that, so for now I'm good to go. I found it fascenating that when I picked up the carburetor yesterday, the local Home Depot didn't have any powered yard equipment (Garden tractors, lawn mowers) in stock; Lowes had a couple of Craftsman garden tractors and three JD zero turn mowers, but nothing else. I guess there's been a run on lawn equipment. The economy can't be all that bad.
I think the economy is really bad for some folks but ok to booming for others. Either way a lot of folks are home and bored so they’re DIYing stuff. Fishing rods, bikes, shelving units, kayaks and pfds are all scarce around here. I hear gun sales are good too. Some say it’s due to fear (partly true) but I think that shooting targets is just another ‘safe’ outdoor activity. Patrick
my bike shop makes a ton of money on wally world bikes. They sell cheap crap that they cannot assemble properly so they have to take it to a real bike shop and pay at least $50 to get it to work. So the shop actually makes more on the bike than the box store.
Our Lowe's & Home Depots here in Alabama have plenty of lawn tractors, lawn mowers, etc. in stock. No shortage here.
In this area box stores like Home Depot and Lowes get a batch in early spring and sell out by August. Sort of like one seasonal order of sleds
I'm curious what was wrong with the old carb? I've cleaned 100s of them and never had to condemn one.
My wife called me a hoarder.......I called it having back-up......if one mower broke I would just hop on another one . ........no waiting on parts either! ---------------------- Eric
