Seller says it's out of a 72 Cutlass. He's asking $300 for it. I'm in no hurry to upgrade but would like to have something better than my current one wheel peel 8.2 in my 65 Pass or grab?
The 72 Cutlass would have the same 8.5 10 bolt with bolt in axles as the 71-72 Skylark/GS. Looks like it has the lugs at 5 and 7 o'clock. I say 8.5. See what Monzaz or Brian say. http://www.jdrace.com/content/diff_id/10b85.php http://www.jdrace.com/images/diff_id/10b85/10b85_1.jpg Cover looks weird.
I found on another site, a post by monzaz no less, where he identified one like this as an Old's 71-72 rear 8.5 posi Trac clutch type unit. Apparently parts aren't readily available.
No, I think he was referring to the Olds "O" type rear. The cover has 12 bolts and 10 bolt internals. That's a good rear, but harder to get parts for. The rear you pictured is a 10 bolt cover. I still think it is the 8.5 just like in the Skylark/GS
The Olds cover is slightly different doesn’t have the cutout for the rear brake line junction bracket. Easy altered.
$ 300 for a posi 8.5 rear is a good price, especially if it is a 3 series carrier. Id buy them like that all day long. that is 100% a 10 bolt 8.5" rear.
That IS and 8.5” 10-bolt posi,BUT it does NOt look like a 71-72. Do you have pictures of the whole rearend? It looks like a 73-77.
As Brian said...Looks like the upper control arm mounts are far apart like the 73-77...BE CAREFUL ...get the complete rear pictures or NO DEAL. the perches need to be hanging off the front to the tube and the shock mounts on the back of the lower control arm mounts. IF the perches are centered and the shock mounts are in front of the axle tubes then it is a 73- 77 and WILL NOT WORK for you. Jim JD Race
Here's the best pic I have of the entire rear. It looks like the perches and shock mounts are correct.
wELL IT APPEARS TO BE CORRECT 71 72 ERA. tricky pictures are really BAD. lol. Last thing would be the width at 55.25 flange to flange 56.25 will be 73 - 77. Jim
Jim, Take a better look at it. Yes,this one can trick you(no pun intended) It look like the spring mounts were moved forward. If you look closely,it looks like the forward shock mounts are still intact, and the just simply installed the shock studs on the rear vertical plate that the 73-77 has. It might be a very old swap that has aged.
yES i DID SEE THAT ALSO. tHE BACK SHOCK MOUNTs are very hard to see too. Just need more pictures and a length. I was comparing the rear ears with pictures I have here from the rear and was VERY close in looks. BUT yes I did see the spring perches being welded (not factory it looks like) and the rear perches should hang back further from that angle...So you maybe right. Jim
If you look closely,it looks like the forward shock mounts are still intact, and the just simply installed the shock studs on the rear vertical plate that the 73-77 has YOUR eyes are much better than mine...I could not zoom in on that picture...NOW I see them...
Well, it sold right before I got there. I actually passed the guy who bought it coming out. I'm just going to buy one from Brian or something. But that will likely have to wait until late summer. This was something local that popped up.
i THINK THINGS went the right way for you....I think Brian was correct in seeing the lower control arms and consider it a close call ...be glad you did not buy it.. t would not have worked out for you...knock on wood.
