It was lighthearted wry humor a reply, but since you asked. Actually, that statement is not true, you stated: "You've only done a small portion of the math equation. You've assumed that the vehicle cost nothing to buy, drive, insure, or maintain. Granted, the difference between 2.50 and 3.00 for gas is only a small part of the equation." The first statement is your point, the second is the premise to the point and the third is the qualifier to the point and premise. Ergo, my reply that walking (in my case, 22k miles a year), is more than the cost of gas and the normal rise and falling of prices as well as the continued increases over time and "worth" the cost, to me. Now let's get back to the fun part.
I, and others, probably misunderstood your point. It just kills me when the news reporter makes a big deal about a small increase in gas prices. OMG.. Gas prices went up a little. We're back to eating dried beans and rice.
I can't remember the last time I drove as vehicle that took gas. Everywhere I go in the country - diesel is always higher priced than gas. Which - makes no common sense because it requires less refining. Jim
I haven't read all of the posts yet, but the value of .30 in 1958 is $2.625 today. That's almost exactly what gas is selling for here today ($2.59 to $2.61 for regular). Gas was about .30 per gallon in 1958
On a "normal trip from Florida to Massachusetts, the logical last gas stop would be in Connecticut. Gas prices there are such a ripoff that we would always stop at the last (northernmost) plaza on the New Jersey Turnpike. We really didn't need gas, but we would make it home without the CT gas stop.
Stand by - the floods in Indiana are hitting the production of ethanol... Massive flooding in the U.S. Midwest has knocked out roughly 13% of the nation’s ethanol production capacity, as plants in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota have been forced to shut down or scale back production.
EriK , all cause here in the good ol' USA, the bean counters figured that most diesel buyers were truckers/equipment operators/business owners. Their view is "Heck, he's a business owner, they can afford to pay more". Used to be the other way around. The business owner/trucker got a discount cause they bought so much. Why is cable/internet twice the price at my business address that what my home bill is? It's called " Squeeze them till they choke, then back off a bit" Then everyone complains about inflation and the price of goods.
What amazes me is .. I can literally find a .70 to .85 cents difference in price driving around for 5 miles. There are some stations that really rape the consumer .. thats what needs governing But wait .. thats not the amazing part - which is, people are always at that over-inflated station filling up !!
Ditto Alan - and Costco/Sams/Safeway beat them all! Its like people wait until they are on fumes and hit the closest station. We have a station nearby that is always a buck more per gallon than the cheapest station and I see cars there all the time. Gasbuddy.com is your friend!
$3.50 or thereabouts in US dollars for a gallon here in Alberta Canada, and we make the crap about 5 miles away from where I live. I'm anticipating it'll jump to over $5.00 again due to contrived shortages, (shutdown planning a la Enron) supposed "summer driving season" (most people fly now, they don't drive) and some silly spike in the crude price. We're still getting a lot less than the Texas bench price for our junk, primarily because our federal government screwed up on getting pipelines built and we're forced to truck and rail transport it through populous centres which is supposedly environmentally safer as well as physically safer. Face it; it's just a racket. Oil companies are the "Robber Barons" of the 20th and 21 centuries just because they can be and they're too big to stop. They know full-well that there is no solid technology out there to replace them and so they're going to stick it to us for as long as they can, much like the coal industry did until the 1950s. We have nothing to say.
Saudi's reduced production 25% , they want oil at $95 a barrel.........Its on the World News the last week or so.
